Football: Guins Hit Weight Room Hard, Ten School Marks Fall
Youngstown -- The Youngstown State
football team continued to hit the
weight room hard during winter
conditioning, as nine players
established 10 new position lifting
records, Strength and Conditioning
Coordinator Todd Burkey announced on
Tuesday.
Setting position records were
quarterback Tom Zetts, defensive
back Lenny Wicks, safety Bob Perez,
defensive tackle Greg Jacobs,
offensive linemen Josh Tanner and
Tyler Booth, tailback Jabari Scott,
fullback Charlie Gresham and tight
end Louis Irizarry.
Overall a group of 79 players went
through testing on five physical
skills -- bench press (one-rep
maximum), back squat (one-rep max),
clean (one-rep max), vertical jump
and three-lift total (bench, squad,
clean).
Out of 382 possible lifts, the
individuals established 280 personal
records (73 percent).
In the three-lift weight category,
seven individuals had a total of
1,200 pounds, 22 went over 1,100
pounds and 41 totaled at least 1,000
pounds.
Individuals to go over 1,200 pounds
were Tanner, offensive lineman Leon
Edwards, Booth, Irizarry, Gresham,
Jacobs and defensive tackle Mychal
Savage.
Position records set during recent
testing were: Zetts - 290-pound
clean (quarterbacks), Wicks -
525-pound squat (defensive backs),
Perez - 315-pound clean (defensive
backs), Jacobs - 475-bench press
(defensive lineman), Tanner - 1,330
three-lift total (offensive
lineman), Booth - 335-pound clean
and 36-inch vertical jump (offensive
lineman), Scott 555-pound squat
(running backs), Gresham 600-pound
squat (fullbacks/tight ends) and
Irizarry 340-pound clean
(fullbacks/tight ends).
The top five individuals who
increased the most weight during the
workout period were cornerback
Jarvis Richards at 185 pounds, free
safety Dorian Chenault at 180,
Irizarry at 160, defensive lineman
Deon'te Williams at 155 and
linebacker James Terry at 150.
The top performances in each category were - Jacobs' 1,375
three-lift total, his 475-pound
bench press, Edwards' 635-pound
squad, Chenault's 38-inch vertical jump
and Irizarry's 340-pound clean.
The Penguins begin Spring practice
on Thursday, March 29 at Stambaugh
Stadium. |
