Football: Seven Guins Named All-Academic, Three First-Teamers

    St. Louis, Mo. – The Youngstown State football team had seven players earn Academic All-Gateway honors while quarterbacks Tom Zetts and Todd Rowan and offensive lineman Brian Mellott were first-team selections.

    Senior Strong Safety Bob Perez, a first-team Academic All-District IV selection, was named second team Academic all-conference. Senior linebacker Jeremiah Wright, senior wide receiver Rory Berry and junior offensive lineman Brad Samsa were Honorable-Mention selections.

    Zetts, a three-time first-team Academic All-Gateway selection, owns a 3.68 grade-point average in Secondary Education. Rowan, a first-time honoree, owns a 4.0 grade-point average as a Biology/Pre-Med major. Mellott, a first-time selection, has a 3.93 GPA as a Business Marketing major.

    Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions and must have completed at least one full academic year at their school. Eleven players were named to the first-team while 11 were tabbed on the second team and 11 earned honorable-mention accolades.

 

First-Team Selections

OL | #51 Brian Mellott, 6-3, 285, So., 3.93 Business Marketing

Started at center the first seven games and right guard the final two games…played in all 11 games on the line and special teams blocking units…saw 468 snaps on offense…season-best grade against Stony Brook…moved from defensive line to offensive line in the spring…transferred from Ohio in January 2006.

 

QB | #15 Todd Rowan, 6-3, 217, So., 4.00 Biology Pre-Med

Holder on all placement kicks…YSU kickers converted 15-of-16 field-goal attempts and 34-of-36 extra points…saw action in three games at quarterback (Lock Haven, UNI, Indiana State)…played 31 snaps for the season…completed first career pass vs. Sycamores…2006 YSU Four Square Club Academic Player of the Year.

 

QB | #24 Tom Zetts, 6-1, 210, Sr., 3.68 Secondary Education

Zetts completed 173-of-277 passes for 1,845 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior…his 62.5 percent completion percentage set a school record…he ended his career as the school career record holder in yards (7,643) completions (654) attempts (1,094) touchdowns (51), percentage (59.8), 200-yard games (13) and starts (47)…started every game his four-year career…led YSU to a 26-10 mark past three seasons…season-high 298 yards in win over Western Illinois…played 682 snaps.

 

Second-Team Selection

SS | #21 Bob Perez, 6-0, 210, Sr., 3.84 Technical Management

Played in all 11 games as a safety and linebacker…moved into linebacker role in final two games of season…credited with 20 total tackles, including 16 solos…had 13 tackles in final four games…first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District IV selection in 2007…first-team Academic All-Gateway in 2006.

 

Honorable-Mention Selections

WR | #2 Rory Berry, 6-1, 185, Sr., 3.02 Sociology

Caught career-high 39 passes for career-best 473 yards…had a catch in nine of 10 games played…caught at least four passes in seven games, including six vs. South Dakota State, Lock Haven and Missouri State…career-high 84 yards against Missouri State…caught 70 passes last two years for 839 yards. 

 

OL | #67 Brad Samsa 6-3, 280, Jr., 3.22 Industrial and Systems Engineering

Started all 11 games on the offensive line…started first three games at right guard before moving to left tackle because of injuries…full-time two-year starter who has been in the lineup for 26 straight games…played an offensive-line high 688 snaps…had five performances of 80 percent or better…graded out at 80 percent for the year…2006 Honorable-Mention Academic All-Gateway.

 

LB | #25 Jeremiah Wright, 5-10, 215, Sr., 3.02 Exercise Science

Recorded a team-high 76 total tackles, including 41 solo stops…had two tackles for losses, a quarterback hurry and a pass breakup…had a season-high 11 stops against Stony Brook…had 10 tackles against Missouri State…had nine against Ohio State and Illinois State…finished his career with 308 stops, 12th most in school history…team captain.
