Football: Tom Zetts, Vince Gliatta, Brandian Ross Named HBK Players of the Game

    Youngstown -- Senior quarterback Tom Zetts, senior strong safety Vince Gliatta and freshman strong safety Brandian Ross were named the Hill Barth & King Players of the Game for their performances in the 40-7 victory over Indiana State, the coaching staff announced on Tuesday.

    Zetts, the HBK Offensive Player of the Game, completed 13-of-18 passes for 111 yards. Zetts ran an efficient Penguin Offense that scored five rushing touchdowns and kicked two field goals during the contest. YSU amassed a season-high 511 yards of total offense, the most since going for more than 500 at Indiana State in 2005.

    Gliatta, the HBK Defensive Player of the Game, finished with four total tackles against the Sycamores. He also had two quarterback pressures and a pass breakup playing on 63 snaps.

    Ross, the HBK Special Teams Player of the Game, was credited with a tackle on the opening kickoff of the contest. In the fourth quarter, the true freshman came up with the first interception of his career.

    Earning honors as the Jim Zdelar Offensive Lineman of the Game was senior guard Josh Tanner. Tanner has started all 10 games at left guard this season. Against the Sycamores, Jabari Scott and Kevin Smith each posted more than 100 yards in rushing. Entering the contest, the Penguins had one 100-yard rusher all season. YSU had 392 yards rushing in the contest.

    Earning honors as the Jermaine Hopkins Defensive Lineman of the Game was senior safety Bob Perez. Perez moved to linebacker during the week with Jeremiah Wright, Rashon Simons and Roshod Cotton being held out because of injuries. Perez played 58 snaps finishing with seven total tackles according to coaching staff numbers.

    Scout team Players of the Week were freshman guard John Nicolozakes (offense), freshman linebacker David Rach (defense) and freshman fullback Joel Younkins (special teams).

    Earning the W.O.W./Derek Pixley Hit of the Week was newcomer Everett Barney. Barney, a junior college transfer, forced a fumble on his first carry play for the Penguins. Covering a kickoff, he drilled Dominic Howard to force a fumble that was recovered by Gliatta.

    The Haines Family Player of the Game was Scott. Scott rushed for a career-best 149 yards on just 14 carries and had two touchdowns.

    Zetts, a team captain, was the recipient of the Wachovia Leadership Award.

    The Penguins close out the 2007 season on Saturday when they play host to Western Illinois. Kickoff at Stambaugh Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
