Football: "Overtime" Community Outreach Program Allows Team to
Thank the
Valley
The Youngstown State
football team has been very active
this spring in giving back to a
community that showed great support
during their NCAA Playoff chase of
the 2006 season.
Since the end of January, the Penguins have spent
nearly 500 hours involved with
community organizations as part their
"Overtime" outreach program. The
"Overtime" program has been a
successful community service
initiative that was created by Head
Coach Jon Heacock and Strength and
Conditioning Coordinator Todd Burkey
a few years ago.
This spring, YSU football student-athletes have visited some
of the following community centers
-- Boys Club, Heart Reach
Ministries, Angels For Animals,
Fairhaven Workshop, Rescue Mission
and the Jessica Moorhead Foundation.
Some schools visited by Penguin players
and coaches include Campbell
Elementary, Leonard Kirtz, Robinwood
Elementary, Davis Elementary, Market
Street Elementary and Columbiana
Schools.
During the 2006 playoffs, the team
received numerous letters and well
wishes from schools and groups
throughout the area. Drawings were
placed in the locker room during the
playoff run in which the Guins won
two home games to reach the
semifinals for the first time since
1999 and seventh time in school
history.
Although a great amount of emphasis is placed on the "Overtime"
program, Penguin student-athletes
will continue to do community
service throughout the rest of the
year.
