Football: Offense Notes Entering Spring Drills
- Brian Mellott, who was on the
defensive line last season, has been
moved to center to replace four-year
starter and All-American Ryan
Jewell.
- Career rushing numbers for the
Guins' top three leading returning
rushers are: Tom Zetts with 323
yards, Jabari Scott with 134 yards
and Brandon Nicholson with 83 yards.
Zetts is the only individual on the
team to rush for more than 100 yards
in a game in their career.
- The following individuals have
started on offense during their
career. Their career starts are in

- Tom Zetts ranks first in school history in completion
percentage (58.9 percent), ranks third in attempts at 817 and
completions 481, is second with 44 touchdown passes and 11 200-yard
games and fourth in passing yardage with 5,788 yards.
- Eight offensive players return who
have career touchdowns. However,
that group has scored just 17
touchdowns. The list is: Zetts (5),
Berry (3), Scott (3), Irizarry (2),
Nicholson (1), Bush (1), Lane (1)
and Horne (1).
- YSU has won 17 of the last 19
games when a back rushes for more
than 100 yards. The two losses were
to UNI and Appalachian State in
2006. YSU was 9-2 last year when at
least one back reached the century
mark.
- In 2006, YSU scored at least 23
points in 12 of the 14 games, scored
at least 27 in at least 10 contests,
had 30-or-more on eight occasions
and scored 50-plus twice.
- The 5,343 total offensive yards
was the third most by the program in
school history. YSU averaged 381.6
yards and 31.4 points per contest in
2006. The 31.4 points per game
average ranked as the fourth highest
in school history.
- Of that yardage, 58.6 percent
(3,132 yards) came on the ground
while 41.4 percent (2,211 yards)
were via the air.
- YSU had 24 scoring drives of
10-plays or more and 14 drives that
took at least five minutes. The
season-long drive was a 17-play 8:40
drive against Southern Illinois. YSU
had 17 scoring drives of five plays
or less, but none came in the final
four games.
- The offensive line surrendered
just 13 sacks for the campaign,
including just two in the three
playoff games and five the last
eight contests of the year.

Youngstown State led the conference
with 277 first downs. The Guins were
also 10-of-11 on fourth-down chances
converting their first 10 of the
season.
- YSU committed just 18 turnovers in
14 games in 2006.

Youngstown State was second in the
Gateway in scoring offense, rushing
offense and turnover margin. YSU
also finished third in total
