Football: Big First Half, Turnovers Push Penguins Past Stony Brook
Youngstown -- The Youngstown State
football team used a 21-point second
quarter and four first half
interceptions to defeat Stony Brook
42-6 on Saturday afternoon at
Stambaugh Stadium.
The Penguins (2-1) defense
intercepted SBU quarerterback Josh
Dudash four times and the offense
was able to turn three of them into
touchdowns.
YSU took a 7-0 lead in the first
quarter with 6:41 left on a one-yard
rush by Jabari Scott. Scott was
impressive on the drive going for 29
yards on the first attempt and
accounting for 50 of the 68 yards on
the eight-play scoring drive.
In the second quarter the defense
rose to the occasion as Myles
Banford, Dorian James Terry and
De'Angelo Wilson all intercepted
Dudash aerials.
The first was by Banford that set
the Guins up at the Stony Brook
27-yard line. That drive featured an
impressive debut by junior tailback
Kevin Smith.
Smith, a junior-college transfer, had runs of 12, seven and
eight, the last of which was his
first touchdown for the program as
YSU went in front 14-0 with 9:04
remaining in the second quarter.
On Stony Brook's next offensive
play, Terry picked off a Dudash pass
at the SBU 44.
The YSU offense made quick work of the turnover as
quarterback Tom Zetts threw a
44-yard touchdown pass to junior
wide receiver Ferlando Williams just
29 seconds later to put the Guins
ahead 21-0 at the 8:35 mark.
Wilson's pick came late in the period on an overthrow by
Dudash. Wilson grabbed the ball at
the YSU 27 and returned it 34 yards
to the SBU 39.
The Penguins worked their two-minute
offense to perfection as Zetts
connected with Williams for their
second touchdown of the quarter,
this time from 15 yards out with 26
seconds remaining.
In the third quarter, the Seawolves
got on the board when Luke Gaddis
connected on a 39-yard field goal
with 10:05 remaining.
After being held out of the end zone
in the third, the Penguins crossed
the goal line twice in the fourth
period.
The first score came on a 15-yard
run by Williams with 10:10
remaining. On the following kickoff,
Da'Michael Horne recovered a live
ball at the Stony Brook 32-yard
line.
Smith scored his second touchdown of
the game just over two minutes later
on a three-yard to put the Guins in
front 42-3.
For the afternoon, Zetts was
12-of-24 for 140 and two touchdowns.
Scott finished with 99 yards on 16
carries and one touchdown. Williams
caught four passes for 66 yards and
had two rushes for 32 yards and a
score.
The Penguins return to action next
Saturday when they play host to
Division II Lock Haven. Kickoff for
the contest is set for 4 p.m.
