Football:
Zetts, Savage, Helle Earn Player of
the Game Award Against Western
Illinois
Youngstown – Senior
quarterback Tom Zetts, junior
defensive tackle Mychal Savage and
senior wide receiver Dustin Helle
were named the Hill Barth & King
Players of the Game for their
efforts in the home finale against
Western Illinois.
Zetts,
the HBK Offensive Player of the Game
and Gateway
Offensive Player of the Week, completed 23-of-32 passes for a
season-high 298 yards in the
victory. Zetts threw two touchdown
passes in the contest against WIU.
The two touchdowns gave him 51 for
his career breaking the school
record of 50 previously held by Jeff
Ryan.
Zetts also broke the school mark for
career 200-yard passing games with
the 13th of his career. The previous
mark of 12 was held by Ron Jaworski.
Zetts ended his career as the
school's all-time leader in passing
yards, attempts, completions,
percentage and touchdown passes.
Savage, the HBK Defensive Player of
the Game, Sports Network National
Defensive Player of the Week and
Gateway's Defensive Player of the
Week, came through with a
career-high 12 tackles, including
nine solo stops, with two sacks and
two fumble recoveries. Savage also
contributed two quarterback hurries.
His sacks were for 11 yards in
losses and his two fumble recoveries
set up touchdowns for Youngstown
State.
Helle, the HBK Special Teams Player
of the Week, helped seal the victory
with his acrobatic catch of a Taylor
Rowan onsides kick with just over a
minute remaining. Helle snared
Rowan's kick and then was pinwheeled
in the air but held on to the
football allowing the Guins to run
out the clock.
The Jim Zdelar Offensive Lineman of
the Game was senior offensive guard
Leon Edwards while the Jermaine
Hopkins Defensive Lineman of the
Game was Dorian Chenault.
Earning accolades as Scout Team
Players of the Week were freshman
quarterback Scooter Hargate
(Offense), junior free safety Tony
Kavouras (Defense) and freshman
cornerback Randy Louis (Special
Teams).
Junior cornerback Jarvis Richards
was the recipient of the W.O.W./Derek
Pixley Hit of the Week while Savage
was named the Haines Family Player
of the Game by the YSU radio
broadcast crew.
In the national polls the Penguins
made some major moves after plenty
of upsets. In the Sports Network
Poll, YSU sits in 17th position
after being ranked 20th last week.
In the FCs Coaches Poll the Guins
are tied for 15th with Eastern
Washington. |
