Football: Stephen Blose, Brian Mellott Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

Youngstown – Sophomore placekicker Stephen Blose (Erie, Pa.) was named ESPN The Magazine first-team All-Academic District IV and junior offensive lineman/tight end Brian Mellott (Austintown, Ohio) was named to the second-team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.

Blose handles kickoff duties for the Penguins. In 2008, he has kicked off 40 times for an average of 58.2 per kickoff. Blose owns a 4.00 grade-point average in Middle Childhood Education.

Mellott has played both offensive lineman and tight end throughout the season. He has played in all 10 games, starting twice. An active member within the community, he owns a 3.96 GPA as a Business Marketing major.

As a first-team all-district selection, Blose is now eligible for All-America honors. The 2008 CoSIDA Academic All-America Football Team will be announced on Nov. 25.

It marks the second straight year YSU has had a student-athlete named first-team academic all-district. Last year, safety Bob Perez was the Guins' first first-team selection since 2003.
District IV encompasses Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky.
