Football: Coach
Heacock, AFCA Members to Wear Coach
to Cure MD Armbands
Youngstown – Youngstown
Sate Head Coach Jon Heacock and
other members of the American
Football Coaches Association will
wear Coach to Cure MD armbands
during college football games this
Saturday. The Penguins take on
fourth-ranked UNI at 4 p.m.
Coaches are wearing armbands to
raise awareness of Duchenne muscular
dystrophy. MD is the most common
fatal genetic disorder diagnosed
during childhood and is the
leading genetic killer of boys and
young men. There is no cure for MD,
but the AFCA is using the Saturday
to promote their fight against the
disease.
Coach to Cure MD is a project of Parent Project Muscular
Dystrophy in partnership with the
AFCA. PPMD is the largest non-profit
organization in the United States
focused entirely on Duchenne
muscular dystrophy. Coach to Cure is
a one-day, nationwide event.
The disease, which is genetic,
effects 1 in every 3,500 live male
births across all races and
cultures. To date, there is no cure
and life expectancy is in the
mid-20's.
The
easiest way to support Coach to Cure
MD is by texting "CURE"
to 90999. Texters
will get a message back asking to
confirm their donation. A reply of
YES is all that is needed to confirm
your donation. A one-time charge of
$5 will be added to your mobile
phone bill. The service is available
on most major U.S. carriers and
standard text messaging rates may
apply.
