Shawn Coin - 1976-2008
Shawn Robert Coin,
31, of Youngstown, Ohio, formerly of
Midland, died unexpectedly after
football practice on Monday Aug. 18,
2008.
Shawn was born on November 21, 1976
to Terry & Donna Coin of
Breckenridge. Shawn graduated from
Breckenridge High School in 1995 and
attended Grand Valley State
University in the Fall of 1995 where
he played football for one semester.
In 2003 Shawn graduated from
Northern Michigan University with a
B.A. in Sports Science with an
emphasis in college coaching and a
minor in business. Shawn then went
on to earn a Masters Degree in
Exercise Science and Health
Promotion from California University
of Pennsylvania in 2005.
In 1997 Shawn met Jennifer (Chapman) Coin while the two
worked at TJ’s Pizza and Don’s video
in Midland. Shawn and Jenny were
married on May 19, 2001. The two
recently found out they are
expecting their first child in April
of 2009.
Shawn’s passion was for sports, especially football. He loved
the University of Michigan, closely
followed Detroit sports teams and
was a big fan of Nascar Racing.
Coach Coin served as the Youngstown
State University Athletic
Department's Video Coordinator. One
of his primary duties was to assist
the football program throughout the
year in their video and scouting
efforts. A former assistant football
coach and video coordinator at
California University (Pa.) and
Northern Michigan University, he
joined YSU in August 2006. Prior to
coming to Youngstown State, he spent
two years at California as the video
co-coordinator and an offensive
assistant. He was also a video
assistant, assistant strength and
conditioning coordinator and
assistant defensive backs coach for
a year at his alma mater, Northern
Michigan.
Shawn in survived by his wife Jennifer (Chapman) Coin,
parents Terry & Donna Coin of
Breckenridge, sisters Melissa (Mark)
Young of Midland and Krystle (Matt)
Rutledge of Bellaire, niece Zoe
Rutledge, Grandmother Bam Tousignant
of Midland, in-laws Dave and Beth
Chapman of Midland, sister-in-law
Katherine Chapman of Midland,
brother-in-law Matthew Chapman of
Grand Rapids, many aunts, uncles,
cousins, and all of his Youngstown
State University Football Family. He
was predeceased by his grandparents
Robert and Blanche Coin and
grandfather Robert Tousignant.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Ware-Smith-Woolever
in Midland. Shawn’s family will
receive friends at the funeral home
on Sunday August 24 from
2:00-4:00p.m. and from 6:00-8:00p.m.
A visitation is also scheduled from
10:00a.m.-11:00a.m. on Monday August
25. A memorial service will begin at
11:00a.m. on Monday at the funeral
home with a burial at Memorial
Gardens Cemetery following the
service.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking those wishing to
express sympathy to consider a
contribution to a fund that has been
established for Baby Coin. Donations
should be made out to “The Family of
Shawn Coin” and sent to any Chemical
Bank branch or sent to the Isabella
road branch located at 3400 E.
