Football: Horne,
Wilson, Barnes Named HBK Players of
the Game Against UNI
Youngstown – Senior
wide receiver Da'Michael Horne,
senior cornerback De'Angelo Wilson
and sophomore wide receiver/kick
returner Dominique Barnes were named
the Hill Barth & King Players of the
Game against UNI, the coaching staff
announced on Tuesday.
Horne was named the HBK Offensive
Player of the Game for his
performance. He caught a team-high
five passes for 64 yards and one
touchdown. His 18-year scoring grab
came near the end of the first half
and help the Guins get within 14-7
at that point.
Wilson was named the HBK Defensive Player of the Game for his
efforts. Wilson was credited with
seven total tackles, including four
solo stops. He had an interception
just before halftime and was
credited with three pass breakups.
He also had a tackle for loss. He
played 76 snaps and earned a grade
of 103 percent from the coaches.
Barnes was named the HBK Special
Teams Player of the Game against the
Panthers. He had kickoff returns of 57 and 48
yards duruing the contest. Barnes
also caught three passes against the
Panthers for 22 yards. He has 25
receptions for 228 yards this
season. He was selected as the
Missouri Valley Football Conference
Special Teams Player of the Week for
his performance.
Senior center Brad Samsa was named
the Jim Zdelar Offensive Lineman of
the Game. It was the first time this
year Samsa has earned the top
offensive lineman of the game honor.
Sophomore defensive tackle Torrance Nicholson was selected as
the Jermaine Hopkins Defensive
Lineman of the Game. Nicholson
played in his first game since
breaking a bone in his foot against
South Dakota State the second week
of the season. Nicholson earned a
line-high grade of 95 percent and
saw action on 55 snaps. He was
credited with 12 total tackles,
including three for losses. he had a
sack for a 12-yard loss in the
contest.
Earning Scout Team honors for their work during the week were
freshman tailback Gary Thornton
(Offense), junior safety Gary
Pezzuolo (Defense) and freshman
linebacker Bryan Whitaker (special
teams).
Senior fullback Charles Gresham was
the recipient of the Wachovia
Leadership Award while Nicholson was
tabbed the Haines Family Player of
the Game by the YSU radio broadcast
crew.
Every Homecoming Game since 2005,
the Football Alumni Group has
selected individuals to earn The
Difference Maker Award for their
on-field contributions during the
annual Homecoming Game. The 2008
winners were Barnes and junior
quarterback Brandon Summers.
Summers, who saw his first action
since Oct. 4 at Southern Utah, was
15-of-32 for 167 yards and threw for
two touchdowns in the game.
Youngstown State (2-7 overall and
1-4 in the MVFC) will try to pick up
its first road win of the season and
snap a five-game losing streak at
Illinois State (2-5 and 1-3) this
Saturday. Kickoff at Hancock Stadium
is set for 2:30 p.m. Eastern/1:30
p.m. Central time.
