Youngstown -- Senior defensive end Mychal Savage (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and wide receiver Donald Jones (Plainfield, N.J.) have been selected as the 2009 Youngstown State football captains, Head Coach Jon Heacock announced recently.

Savage has been named a captain for the second consecutive season, while Jones, is the first wide receiver to be elected captain since Herb Williams in 1992. Jones is also the first player who came to YSU from a junior college to be selected since current YSU assistant coach Sherod Holmes in 2003.

Last season, Savage's captaincy was cut short when he suffered a season-ending injury at Ohio State in the opener. Despite sitting out the final 11 contests, he received the Ron Stoops Inspirational Player Award for his commitment to the 2008 squad.

Donald Jones is the first wide receiver to be named a team captain since Herb Williams during the 1992 campaign.

In his career, Savage has played in 36 games while starting 32. He has been credited with 116 total tackles, including eight sacks.

Jones joined the program last August, but has made his impact felt on and off the field.

He led the team with 510 yards receiving while scoring seven touchdowns on 31 receptions.

In other news, senior wide receiver Aaron Pitts and junior placekicker Stephen Blose will represent the football program on Youngstown State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2009-10 academic year.

YSU continues preparations for its season opener on Sept. 5 at Pitt with a practice on Friday afternoon. YSU will take Saturday off before returning to work on Sunday.
