Football: Guins
Complete
Second Week; Reach Half-Way Point of
Spring Camp
Youngstown – The
Youngstown State football team
completed its seventh workout of the
spring on Friday morning at
Stambaugh Stadium.
Through the seven workouts, the defense has steadily improved
while the offense is now wearing the
coveted red jerseys after starting
the spring in the
whites.
Following the workout, Coach Jon Heacock said the team has
worked very hard through the first
11 days of spring ball, but much
work lies ahead in the final
two-plus weeks that lie ahead.
Coach Heacock said next week's
practice schedule has been altered a
bit after looking at the forecast.
After taking Saturday and Sunday off for Easter weekend, YSU
will return to practice on Monday
instead of Tuesday, Heacock said.
The forecast for Monday morning
looks good while inclement weather
is forecast for Tuesday. Heacock
said he will not be at Monday's
practice attending a funeral out of
town.
On Monday afternoon, the remainder
of the Penguins' coaching staff will
attend the funeral of former Penguin
Al Campana. Campana played for the
Penguins from 1946-49 and following
his YSU career spent four seasons in
the NFL. His grandson, Ty, is a
senior wide receiver for the Guins.
The Guins will practice Wednesday and Thursday before holding
their jersey scrimmage on Saturday
at 9:30 a.m. Next Friday, the team
will have a special guest speaker,
Heacock said.
Last Saturday, Heacock surprised the team with a 30-play
jersey scrimmage where the offense
won the Reds from the defense. The
defense held the jerseys entering
spring ball.
The annual Bob Dove Spring Luncheon
is set for Tuesday, April 21 at Noon
at the DeBartolo Stadium Club.
The Red-White Spring Game is set for Friday, April 23, at
7:30 p.m. It will be carried live on
NewsRadio 570 WKBN.
