Men’s Golf: Guins Place 14th in Strong Field Before Monday's League
Championships
Akron, Ohio -- The
Youngstown State men’s golf team
placed 14th at strong First Energy
Intercollegiate field on Sunday
afternoon at the Firestone Country
Club in Akron.
The Penguins, who will begin action
in the Horizon League Championships
on Monday in Lebanon, Ohio, took on
a strong field finishing with a
three-round score of 921 following
rounds of 302, 302 and 317.
YSU was in 10th place following the
first two rounds on Saturday before
finishing up tournament action on
Sunday prior to heading to the
league meet which starts Monday
morning at the Shaker Run Golf
Course.
Eastern Kentucky won the event with
a three-round 868 finishing just one
shot in front of the host Zips at
869. The lone other Horizon League
school competing in the event was
Cleveland State, which finished 16th
with a 929.
Leading the way for the Penguins
once again was sophomore Ryan Stocke.
Stocke placed 22nd with three-round
six-over par score of 222. Stocke
had rounds of 77, 72 and 73 for the
event.
Junior Ross Beal dropped to 46th
place with a three-round score of
229, 13-over par. Beal had rounds of
74 and 72 before carding an 83 on
Sunday. Other finishers were
freshman Ryan Alpeter who had a 238
(80, 79, 79) to finish 78th, senior
Jim Powers who also had a 238 (76,
79, 83) to finish 78th and freshman
Tim Morrow who carded a 241
(75-84-82) to place 89th. Freshman
Jon Hamarik placed 95th with a 251
(78, 87, 86) competing as an
individual.
Last year, YSU finished second in
the league meet behind the Vikings.
The second-place finish was the best
by the program since joining the
Horizon League six years ago.
