Women’s Golf: Gina Abruzzino Finishes Fifth;
YSU Second at HL Championships
Galena, Ohio –
Senior Gina Abruzzino was one of three Youngstown State women's golfers to place
in the top 10 at the 2005 Horizon League Women's Golf Championships which
concluded on Tuesday at the Royal American Links Golf Course. Abruzzino placed
fifth while freshman Felicia Ciotola was seventh and freshman Brittany Jones was
10th.
Abruzzino carded an 82 on Tuesday to finish with a
three-round score of 249. She had rounds of 84 and 83 on Monday. Ciotola carded
an 87 on Tuesday to finish with a 253 for the tournament. On Monday, she had
scores of 88 and 78 and was in fifth place following the first 36 holes. Jones
had an 85 on Tuesday to score a 257 for the three rounds. She had scores of 85
and 87 the first two rounds.
The Penguins finished second in the team race finishing with
a three-round total of 1,020. Butler ran away with the team crown posting a 972.
The Bulldogs had four individual place in the top seven as Lynnsey Showers won
the individual title by 16 strokes with a 226. Loyola was third with a 1,027,
Cleveland State placed fourth with a 1,067 and Detroit had a 1,099 competing in
its first HL Championships.
Sophomore Bonnie Sherman placed 13th with a 257 after carding
an 86 on Tuesday while freshman Mallory Wyderka was 18th with a 270 after firing
an 85 on the final day.
For her efforts, Abruzzino was named first-team
all-conference for the third consecutive year.
In the three years, the Penguins
have finished first, second and third at the conference championship. |
