Women’s Golf: YSU Looks to
Reclaim the Top Prize at the
Horizon League Championships
After three first-place
tournament finishes this year,
the Youngstown State women’s
golf team looks to capture the
Horizon League Championships at
Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel,
Ind., beginning this Saturday.
Thirty-six holes are set for
Saturday while the final round
is set for Sunday. Last season, the Guins placed third at the HL Championships,
with senior Brittany Jones
leading the way finishing
fourth. The team will look to
take the momentum from their
victory at the Loyola
Invitational on April 14-15 into
the Championships this weekend. YSU’s lineup this year at the HL Championships is freshman
Katie Rogner, junior Mollie
Boney, and seniors Jones,
Adrianna DiLonardo, and Felicia
Ciotola. This will also be the
last event for the three seniors
as Penguins. Throughout the regular season, YSU was led by Rogner. Rogner,
a two-time Horizon League Golfer
of the Week, will be looking to
make it back-to-back medalist
honors with a win at the HL
Championships after winning at
Loyola. Rogner had a great fall
and has not missed a beat this
spring. She has been the team’s
top placer in every meet this
season and will be a key
component to YSU reclaiming the
Championship. Jones will be making her fourth appearance at the HL
Championships and is looking to
cap off her fantastic four years
as a Guin on a high note. Jones
has finished in the top 10 every
year she has competed at the
event, including a fourth-place
finish last year. She was fifth
as a sophomore and 10th as a
freshman. Ciotola will also making a fourth trip back to the
Championships in as many years.
After finishing in 13th a year
ago, Ciotola will look to
improve on that and crack the
top ten. Her career-best finish
at the meet was seventh as a
freshman. She was also 13th as a
sophomore. Making her third trip to the HL Championships in four years
is Adrianna DiLonardo. DiLonardo
tied for 15th at the
event last year, but was sixth
in her first trip in 2006. Making her first trip to the event in three years with the
program is Boney. Boney is
coming off a seventh place
finish at the UD Titan
Invitational, and has had a
solid junior campaign. Since winning the inaugural Horizon League Championship in
2003, the Penguins have finished
second in 2005 and 2006, and
third in 2004 and 2007. Butler
has won the last three HL
Championships since Loyola and
YSU split the first two. |
