Women's Golf: Penguins Claim YSU Fall Invitational By Six Strokes
Salem, Ohio -- The Youngstown State women's golf team claimed the
season-opening
YSU Fall Invitational team title finishing six strokes
ahead of
second-place finisher Dayton at
Salem Hills Golf Course. Youngstown
State built a seven stroke
first-round lead on Sunday and was
able to hold off a late Flyer
charge on Monday.
The Penguins finished with a
two-round total of 629 after carding
a 217 on Monday and an opening round
312 on Sunday. Dayton was second
with a 635, 10 strokes
behind the Penguins, in third place
was Detroit (639).
Standout individual performances by the
Penguins led to this victory, the
first since winning the Loyola
Invitational in April 2006.
Junior Mollie Boney
led the Guins with a score of 76
on Monday's play, finishing the
tournament with a total score of
156. First-round leader
freshman Katie Rogner, shot an 80 ending the
invitational with a score of 156 as
well.
Other participating
golfers, Adrianna DiLonardo (76-83
-- 159) was eighth,
Brittany Jones (80-81 -- 161) was
14th, Brittany Stillwagon (81-80 --
161) was also 14th
and Ann Ciavarella (86-83 -- 169) to
place 30th performed
outstandingly in the tournament.
Boney, Rogner, DiLonardo, Jones and
Stillwagon all placed within the top
20 of the contest. Additionally,
Felicia Ciotola (78-82 -- 160), who competed this
tournament as an independent, landed in an
11th place tie. A total of 62 golfers represented their
respective schools in the
tournament.
This year's YSU tournament marked the
seventh Invitational, hosted by the
Penguins.
Next up for the team will be Sept.
23-23 at the Saint
Francis (Pa.) Invitational in Loretto, Pa.
