Men's Basketball: YSU Travels to Cleveland;
One Team to Snap Streak
The Youngstown State men’s basketball team renews its
Northeast Ohio rivalry with
Cleveland State on Saturday at 5:30
p.m. at the CSU Convocation Center.
YSU will be looking to snap a
four-game losing streak while the
Vikings will be trying to end a
seven-game skid.
The Penguins (3-10 overall and 1-3 in the Horizon League) are
playing their second straight road
game after losing 78-55 at UW-Green
Bay on Thursday night. Quin Humphrey
and Alex Sanchez each scored 12
points against the Phoenix.
The Vikings (3-7 and 0-2) have played a brutal stretch of
five consecutive road games after
playing four of their first five at
home this season. On Thursday, CSU
dropped a 73-57 at Wright State. The
contest against the Guins will be
their first home game since Dec. 11
when they entertained Kent State.
Both teams are familiar with one another having played 61
times in their respective histories.
Last season, the Penguins won both
games by a combined total of six
points, including a 61-59 win in
Cleveland. These two teams will play
at the Beeghly Center on Saturday,
Jan. 22.
Scouting Cleveland State
Senior forward Omari
Westley leads the Vikings averaging 14.3 points per game following a team-high
18 points against Wright State on Thursday. He is also averaging 9.4 boards a
game. At Wright State on Thursday night, the Vikings fell behind 40-25 at
halftime before playing WSU close (33-32) in the second half.
Modibo Niakate is averaging 10.7 points and Raheem Moss is
averaging 10.3 for CSU. Sophomore forward Patrick Tatham started the first eight
games of the year before suffering an injury in warm-ups prior to the game at
Loyola on Jan. 3 and has missed the past two contests.
Last Year’s Meetings Between YSU-CSU
The Penguins won both
games by a combined total of six points, including a 61-59 win in Cleveland. The
other contest was a 86-82 triumph at the Beeghly Center.
In the game at CSU last year, the Penguins overcame a 29-25
halftime deficit to rally for the victory. The contest was evenly played with
both teams making 22 field goals and one 3-pointer each. YSU made two more free
throws which proved to be the final margin in the contest.
In Youngstown, the Penguins led by 14 in the second half
before CSU rallied to take a 63-62. But YSU answered with a 13-1 run only to
watch the Vikings get within 82-80 with 27 seconds left. Baumann made four three
free throws in the final 22 seconds to seal the deal.
Last Time Out: UW-Green Bay 78, YSU 55
The Penguins played
hard in the first half then struggled in the second losing 78-55 at UW-Green Bay
on Thursday night. YSU trailed by just five with more than two minutes remaining
in the first half, but at the break the Phoenix led 43-34. In the second half,
UWGB went on a 19-4 run to take control. Quin Humphrey and Alex Sanchez each had
12 points. Humphrey’s 12 came in the first half while Sanchez drained three
treys in the opening stanza.
Robic In His Sixth Season
Coach John Robic is in
his sixth season as the head coach at Youngstown State. Robic is one of only
three YSU coaches -- Dom Rosselli and Dan Peters are the other two -- to spend
at least six seasons with the program. Robic owns a career mark of 56-100. His
56 victories rank as the fourth-best total in school history. His 156 games
coached rank third in school history.
YSU-Cleveland State Series
The Penguins and
Vikings have played 61 times in their history. YSU has won three of the last
four and since the Penguins joined the Horizon League the series is tied 3-3.
Prior to resuming the series in 2002, the squads had not played since 1996.
Youngstown State and Cleveland State had played from every calendar year from
1967 through 1996 until the series was halted.
YSU Hitting the Boards Hard
In the last five
games, the Penguins have outrebounded opponents 165-164. Youngstown State has
also won the rebound margin in three of the last five games. In the first eight
contests of the season, YSU was outrebounded 330 to 261 and did not win the
rebound battle one time.
Humphrey 3rd In The League
Sophomore guard Quin
Humphrey is tied for third in the Horizon League in scoring averaging 15.2
points a contest. He trails UW-Milwaukee’s Ed McCants (16.4) and Wright State’s
DaShaun Wood (15.6) Also, Humphrey’s 72 field-goals made rank third in the
league. He ranks sixth in the league in free-throw percentage at 78.4.
Humphrey Mr. Double Figures
Quin Humphrey became
the first Penguin since 1978-79 to score in double figures in the first 13 games
of the season. That year, Dave Zeigler scored in double figures in the first 17
contests.
Humphrey has scored at least 14 points in nine of 13 games
this year. He scored a season-high 26 points against Loyola. He has scored 198
points in 13 games this season after scoring 183 in 27 games a year ago.
Harris Leads the League
Sophomore guard Derrick Harris is tied
for the Horizon League lead in 3-point field-goal percentage. Harris has made
43.2 percent of his attempts (16-of-37) this season. He is tied with UW-Green
Bay’s Josh Lawrence, who is also 16-of-37.
Sanchez Has Best Game
Freshman forward Alex Sanchez had the
best game of his young career at UW-Green Bay on Thursday. Sanchez, who came
into the game 0-for-13 on the season and 0-of-10 from 3-point range, made three
straight 3-pointers in the first half. For the game, he finished with 12 points
on 4-of-6 shooting.
It’s a Block Party
Through 13 games this season, the
Penguins are leading the Horizon League in blocked shots. YSU has blocked 58
shots for an average of 4.5 per game. The Penguins had six blocks at Green Bay.
Racking Up the Minutes
Currently, three Penguins are averaging
more than 30 minutes. Jon Mends is averaging 35.2 minutes per game, Quin
Humphrey is averaging 34.5, Brian Radakovich is at 32.3.
