The Youngstown State men’s
basketball team continues its trip
through Wisconsin heading north to
Green Bay for a Saturday afternoon
contest against the Phoenix. Tipoff
at the Resch Center is set for 2:05
p.m. Eastern time and will be
carried live in Youngstown on 570
WKBN.
Youngstown State (7-12 overall and
3-6 in the Horizon League) suffered
its third straight loss falling to
Milwaukee 76-69 on Thursday night at
the U.S. Cellular Arena. The
Penguins shot 47.3 percent from the
field and 44.4 percent from 3-point
range, but were done in at the
free-throw line as the Panthers had
20 points from the charity stripe
compared to the Guins’ nine. Senior
guard Byron Davis scored 22 points,
John Barber had a double-double with
16 points and 11 rebounds and
freshman guard Vytas Sulskis
contributed 15 points in a losing
effort.
Green Bay (10-8 and 4-4) became the
first Horizon League team to knock
off Cleveland State on Thursday
beating the Vikings 59-50 at the
Resch Center. After trailing by five
at halftime, UWGB outscored CSU
40-26 in the second half to win for
the seventh time in eight home games
this season. Terry Evans’ all-around
effort helped Green Bay snap a
three-game losing streak. Evans had
16 points, eight rebounds and four
blocks.
YSU has lost eight of the last nine
games in the series, including three
defeats to the Phoenix last year.
UWGB beat YSU 55-46 in Green Bay,
59-49 in Youngstown and 72-55 in the
Horizon League tournament
quarterfinals in Dayton, Ohio.
Saturday’s contest is the 21st
meeting between the programs. YSU
has won four of those contests, the
last a 95-70 victory at the Beeghly
Center on Jan. 5, 2006.

• This is the 11th
all-time meeting between YSU and
UWGB in Green Bay. The Penguins lone
win was a 65-61 win on March 4, 2003
in the opening round of the Horizon
League Tournament. YSU has scored
more than 60 points at Green Bay
once.

UWGB, YSU is averaging 76.5 points
per game. In the 16 losses, the
Guins are averaging 55.8 points a
contest.

offset an cold shooting performance
for Youngstown State fell to Green
Bay 55-46 on Feb. 8, 2007 at the
Resch Center.
Liles finished with 14 points , 13
rebounds and five blocks, but the
Penguins shot 28 percent.
The Phoenix shot just 35.6 percent
but held YSU to long scoring
droughts toward the end of both
halves.
Mike Schachtner scored a game-high
21 points and Ryan Evanochko added
16 for UWGB.
After a Liles two-handed dunk made
the score 33-30 in favor of UW-Green
Bay with 15:15 remaining in the
second half, the Phoenix scored the
next five points to go up eight and
never led by less than five the rest
of the way.

rough shooting night offset a good
defensive effort as the Youngstown
State lost 59-49 to UW-Green Bay.
The Penguins shot a season-low 32.8
percent in the contest making

the free-throw line making 9-of-20
shots (45 percent).

Bay opened up the second half on an
11-1 run and YSU could not recover
losing 72-55 in the quarterfinals

Penguins are 0-13 when they fail to

Senior guard Byron Davis scored 22
points and Youngstown State chopped
a 14-point second half deficit to
three, but the Penguins could never
get over the hump losing 76-69 to
Milwaukee at the U.S. Cellular Arena
on Thursday.
YSU trailed 57-43 with just under 13
minutes remaining in the game.
However, the Penguins fought back to
within 64-61 on a Vytas Sulskis
3-pointer with 6:14 left.
But that was as close as the Guins
could get as the Panthers scored the
next seven points to go ahead 71-61
at the 4:39 mark. In the final 5:51
of the contest, UWM made just one
field goal, but made 10 free throws
to maintain the lead and earn a
season sweep of YSU.
Davis Provides
Steady Hand
Guard Byron Davis has scored in
double figures 15 times while
scoring 20-or-more points on four
occasions. He had nine double-figure
scoring games last year.
Davis scored a career-high 23 points
against Valparaiso on Jan. 17. On
Thursday, he finished with 22 at
Milwaukee. He had 21 points at Saint
Francis (Nov. 28) and 20 against
Robert Morris (Dec. 17).
Against Valpo, he was 10-of-16 from
the field, including going 3-of-4
from behind the 3-point line. He set
a career high by making 10 shots.
He tied his career high making four
3-pointers at UWM on Thursday.
In his career (New Mexico State and
YSU) he has scored 877 points,
making 114 3-pointers while dishing
out 277 assists.
Barber Giving
Opponents a Trim
Senior forward John Barber has
scored in double figures in a
team-high 16 games.
He had picked up his seventh career
double-double and third of the
season with 16 points and 11 boards
at UWM.
In the past 17 games, he has scored
235 points (13.8 per game) while
grabbing 119 rebounds (6.9 per
contest). He has grabbed at least
five rebounds in 16 games.
Barber has scored 85 points in the
past five games.
For his career, Barber has scored
878 points while grabbing 505
rebounds.
He’s Our Vytas
Freshman guard Vytas Sulskis has
made a big contribution in his first
year.
On Jan. 3, he scored a career-best
26 points against UIC. His effort
tied for the third most by a Penguin
freshman since 1980. Only Tim
Jackson’s 32 and 31 point outings in
1987-88 season were better.
At Milwaukee he scored 15 points
while grabbing seven rebounds.
In the past 12 games he has made 24
3-pointers. For the year, he has
made 30 3-pointers. The most by a
freshman in school history is 31 by
Mike Alcorn in 1990-91.
Cooksey Stirs Guins’
Recipe
Guard Vance Cooksey leads the team
with 57 assists and 24 steals. After
starting 16 of the first 17 games,
he has come off the bench the last
two games.
Cooksey has had at least three
assists in 10 contests. He also has
scored in double digits against
UCLA, Weber State, Notre Dame and
Robert Morris. In the final five
minutes of games, Cooksey is
22-of-25 (88 percent) from the
free-throw line.
At Detroit, he drilled two
3-pointers in the victory. YSU is
3-1 this year when Cooksey makes at
least two 3-pointers in a contest.
His career-best is four against
Weber State (Nov. 13).
Liles Contributing
in Post
Junior forward Jack Liles continues
to provide a strong presence in the
post.
Liles leads the team with a 52.2
field-goal percentage making
83-of-159 shots. For the year, he is
averaging 10.7 points and 4.8
rebounds per contest. He has scored
in double figures 12 times,
including 10 of the last 14 games.
He has attempted double figures in
shots eight times this season,
including four of the past six
contests. Liles leads the team with
17 blocks and ranks fourth in school
history with 72 career swats.
Holmes Builds
Foundation
Senior forward Dwight Holmes has
seen an increased role since the
Robert Morris game on Dec. 17.
Entering that contest Holmes had
played just 70 minutes and had 16
points and 17 rebounds. Since that
time, Holmes has played 178 minutes
in the last 11 games. He has scored
50 points and grabbed 19 rebounds.
He is 18-of-35 (53.1 percent) from
the field in those contests. He has
also made seven of his last eight
free-throw attempts.
Holmes had eight points, three
rebounds and a blocked shot in 20
minutes of action at UWM on
Thursday.
Johnson is the Sixth
Man
Junior guard Mel Johnson is the
Penguins’ version of Vinnie Johnson.
As the sixth man, Johnson has scored
67 points, grabbed 43 rebounds, has
22 steals, 18 assists and five
blocks. At Wright State on Jan. 10
he had eight points, three boards,
three assists, three steals and a
blocked shot.
Niemi Starts
Previous Two
Junior guard Mikko Niemi has started
the last two games at the point.
Niemi had started just one of the
previous 17 contests.
Niemi has played
double figures in minutes in eight
of last nine contests after seeing
that much time just three times in
the first 10 contests.
He has scored 12 of his 15 points,
grabbed 17 of his 28 rebounds and
dished out 17 of his 35 assists in
those games.
Free-Throw Shooting
Wavers
The Penguins have either been on
from the line or way off.
Six times, YSU has
shot 76.7 percent or better from the
line while on nine other occasions
the Penguins have shot 60 or below.
Twice this year, YSU has shot in the
30s -- vs. Valpo (38.5 percent) and
at Wright State (36.4 percent).
First Half or Second
Half?
YSU has shown spurts of playing well
during different halves this season.
In the first three games of the
season, the Penguins had 126
first-half points compared to just
90 second-half points. Included in
that total was a 60-point effort
against Lock Haven, the Guins’ most
since February 1992.
In an eight-game stretch (Nov.
24-Dec. 29), the Guins totaled 216
points in the first half (27 points
a half) and 292 in the first half
(36.5 a half).
From Jan. 3-12 (five games) YSU had
scored 187 points in the first half
and 128 in the second. In the past
three games, YSU has scored 75
first-half points and 114
second-half points.
Seven Players are
Scoring
The Penguins have relied on seven
players to handle the scoring duties
this year. Of the 1,238 points
scored, John Barber, Byron Davis,
Jack Liles, Vance Cooksey, Vytas
Sulskis, Mel Johnson and Dwight
Holmes have contributed 1,171.
Overall, 94.6 percent of YSU’s
scoring goes through those seven.
Scoring 30...Nine
Times
The Guins have had nine 30-point
individual performances since Coach
Slocum took over the program. In the
previous 13 seasons, YSU had nine
30-point games. Last year, Quin
Humphrey had three contests while
Keston Roberts had two. The five in
a season was the most since 1986-87.
