Men's Basketball: Penguins Return Home Against Green Bay

The Youngstown State men’s basketball team plays two of its final three regular-season games at the Beeghly Center beginning with a contest against Green Bay on Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. and will be carried live in Youngstown on 570 WKBN and on tape-delay on MyYTV and Fox 17/62.

Youngstown State (8-18 overall and 4-12 in the Horizon League) will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Last Saturday, the Penguins suffered a 77-58 loss at Valparaiso. Byron Davis had 18 points while Dwight Holmes and Vytas Sulskis both scored 10 before fouling out. The contest was tied at 22 with just over four minutes remaining in the first half, but Valpo closed on a 10-0 run to grab a 32-22 lead at the break. The closest the Guins could get the rest of the way was six points early in the second half.

Green Bay (13-12 and 7-8) has now lost three consecutive contests as well after losing 66-56 on Saturday to Milwaukee. Against the Panthers, Rahmon Fletcher scored 15 points. However, UWM outscored the Phoenix 33-24 in the second half sweep the season series. UWGB has also lost to Butler 62-57 (Feb. 9) and at Cleveland State 81-64 (Feb. 11) during its recent three-game losing stretch.

The Penguins dropped a 66-58 loss to the Phoenix earlier this season in Green Bay. The Guins trailed 52-51 with just over seven minutes remaining, but could never grab the lead. YSU led by nine points in the first half before UWGB cut it to two at halftime.

The Phoenix has defeated YSU five straight times while winning nine of the last 10 meetings. The Penguins’ last win was on Jan. 5, 2006 (95-70) at the Beeghly Center.

Opening Tips...

• This is the 22nd all-time meeting and ninth in Youngstown between Green Bay and YSU. The Guins have dropped three of the last four meetings at Beeghly.

• Against Valpo, senior forward Dwight Holmes made his first 3-pointer of the season on his first attempt.

• Sophomore Alek Mrozik drained his second 3-pointer of the year at Valpo.

• Valpo and Butler made a combined 45 3-pointers against the Penguins this year. In the four games each team drilled 10-or-more. YSU has not allowed more than nine 3-pointers in its 22 other contests.

• The 16-point loss at Butler and the 19-point defeat at Valpo was just the second time this year YSU lost consecutive games by double figures.

• YSU is 5-2 when making at least seven 3-pointers in a game.

• YSU had won 15 straight games when leading at halftime, but has now dropped its last two when leading at the break (Valpo and at Green Bay).

• The Guins are 12-2 the last 14 games when shooting at least 50 percent and won their last seven when scoring 80 points.

• Twice this year YSU has had five players score in double figures in the same game (Lock Haven, Robert Morris).

• Barber will be playing his 113rd career game on Wednesday while senior Dwight Holmes will appear in his 107th contest.

• YSU has had the same starting lineup the past seven games (Mikko Niemi, Vytas Sulskis, Byron Davis, Dwight Holmes and John Barber).

Scouting the Phoenix

Green Bay has not lost four straight this season, but enters Wednesday night’s game on a three-game losing skid. The Phoenix has three players who are averaging double figures in scoring. Leading the way is junior forward Mike Schachtner at 16.4 points per contest.

Earlier This Year at Green Bay

A solid first-half effort and a 16-of-17 performance from the free-throw line was almost enough, but Youngstown State suffered a 66-58 defeat to Green Bay at the Resch Center on Jan. 26.

The Penguins built a 33-24 first-half lead. However, the Phoenix went on a 20-4 run to take a 44-37 lead early in the second half.

YSU regrouped and was able to get within 46-45 with 12:17 remaining in the contest. Freshman Vytas Sulskis made the first of two free throws to cut the deficit to one.

Again, YSU crept within 52-51 with 7:08 on a three-point play by Byron Davis. Green Bay clamped down defensively holding the Guins scoreless for the next 5:16 while scoring the next six to earn the victory.

Last Year At Beeghly Center

A rough shooting night offset a good defensive effort as Youngstown State lost 59-49 to Green Bay on Jan. 11, 2007 at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins shot 32.8 percent making 19-of-58 attempts, including 2-of-14 3-pointers. YSU also struggled from the free-throw line making 9-of-20 shots.

Youngstown State was able to hold the Phoenix to 59 points, however UWGB shot 43.4 percent while making eight threes.

Quin Humphrey scored 17 points on 8-of-25 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds.

For the Phoenix, Mike Schachtner scored a game-high 20 points and was its only player to finish in double figures.

All-Time Series vs. UWGB

Of the previous 21 meetings, the Guins have scored 65-or-more points on seven occasions. YSU is 4-3 in those contests, but has never won when scoring under 62 points. In each of the last five games, YSU has failed to shoot 40 percent.

Last Time Out...Valpo 77-58

Youngstown State fell victim to some hot shooting for the second straight game as Valparaiso connected on 11 3-pointers en route to a 77-58 victory over the Penguins on Saturday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Byron Davis led YSU with 18 points while Vytas Sulskis and Dwight Holmes each added 10 before fouling out.

For the game, Valpo shot 54.2 percent (26-of-48) while the Guins shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54). The Crusaders were 11-of-24 from 3-point range (45.8 percent) while YSU was 6-of-19 (31.6 percent).

Leading the way for Valparaiso was Jarryd Loyd who scored 18 points. Jake Diebler had 14 and was 4-of-7 from behind the 3-point line. Bryan Bouchier had 11 points while Shawn Huff added 10.

Sulskis has scored in double figures 10 times this season, including a career-best 26 points against UIC on Jan. 3. His effort against the Flames tied for the third most by a Penguin freshman since 1980.

Liles Contributing in Post

Junior forward Jack Liles continues to provide a strong presence in the post.

Liles, who has come off the bench the past seven games, is shooting 54.6 percent from the field. He has made 107-of-196 shots from the field. For the year, he is averaging 10.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. He has scored in double figures 15 times this season after having 14 double-figure scoring games in his career.

Liles leads the team with 20 blocked shots and ranks fourth in school history with 75 career swats.

Holmes Builds Foundation

Senior forward Dwight Holmes had a career-best 19 points at Loyola on Jan. 31. Holmes, whose previous career high was 12 at Duquesne on Nov. 13, 2007, was 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. He also played a career-best 32 minutes. Holmes has started the last seven games for YSU after starting 23 times last year.

He has seen an increased role since the Robert Morris game on Dec. 17. Entering that contest Holmes had played just 70 minutes and had 16 points and 17 rebounds.

Since that time, Holmes has played 338 minutes in the last 18 games. He has scored 101 points in those games, including 10 at Valpo last Saturday.

Johnson is the Sixth Man

Junior guard Mel Johnson is the Penguins’ version of Vinnie Johnson. As the sixth man, Johnson has scored 90 points, grabbed 57 rebounds, has 27 assists, 26 steals and 11 blocks. At Valpo last Saturday he had nine points after scoring eight at Butler earlier in the week.

In an eight-game stretch (Nov. 24-Dec. 29), the Guins totaled 216 points in the first half and 292 in the second half.
