Men's Basketball:
Penguins Start Strong, But Come Up
Short at Green Bay
Green
Bay, Wis. -- A solid first-half
effort and a 16-of-17 performance
from the free-throw line was almost
enough, but the Youngstown State
men's basketball team suffered a
66-58 defeat to
Green Bay at the Resch Center
on Saturday afternoon.
The Penguins (7-13 overall
and 3-7 in the Horizon League)
built a 33-24 first half lead.
However, the Phoenix (11-8 and
5-4) went on a 20-4 run to take
a 44-37 lead early in the second
half.
YSU regrouped and was able
to get within 46-45 with 12:17
remaining in the contest.
Freshman Vytas Sulskis made the
first of two free throws to cut
the deficit to one, but missed
the second, YSU's only miss from
the Charity stripe the entire
game.
Again, YSU crept within
52-51 with 7:08 on a three-point
play by Byron Davis.
Green Bay clamped down
defensively holding the Guins
scoreless for the next 5:16 to
earn its second straight win.
The Phoenix scored the
next six points to go in front
58-51 with 2:11 left. The Guins
ended their drought on a Sulskis
basket, but were only able to
get within four the remainder of
the contest.
For the game, YSU shot 38
percent making 19-of-50 attempts
while UWGB was 23-of-52 from the
field (44.2 percent). At the
line, the Penguins shot a
season-best 94.1 percent while
the Phoenix were 16-of-20.
Sulskis finished with a
game-high 19 points, 13 of which
came in the opening half. Byron
Davis finished with 16 and Jack
Liles came off the bench for the
first time this season to finish
with 12 points.
Leading the way for
Green Bay was Ryan
Tillema who had 14 while Mike
Schactner and Ramon Fletcher
each finished with 11. Fletcher
combined with Terry Evans to go
8-for-8 from the free-throw line
the final 1:17.
In the first half, YSU led
33-24 with 1:39 left before UWGB
scored the final seven points of
the half.
The Penguins continue their
road swing
next Thursday play at
Loyola. Tipoff at the Gentile
Center is set for
8 p.m. Eastern time. |
