Men's Basketball:
Barber Nets 25
Points As Guins Fall 50-47 to Wright
State
Youngstown -- John Barber
scored a career-high 25 points, but
Todd Brown's late 3-pointer lifted
Wright State past the Youngstown
State men's basketball team 50-47 on
Saturday night at the Beeghly
Center.
Barber was 9-of-15 from the field,
3-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc
and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line
finishing with his career-best
output.
The Penguins trailed 31-23 at
halftime and 43-33 with 11:51
remaining, but they did not go
quietly.
Five straight points cut the deficit to 43-38 before Scottie
Wilson's basket with 9:23 left put
the Raiders in front 45-38.
The Guins held WSU scoreless for the
next 5:01 to get as close as 45-43
after Vytas Sulskis connected on a
3-pointer and John Barber made two
free throws.
Jordan Pleiman's rebound and putback
of a missed Vaughn Duggins 3-pointer
gave the Raiders a 47-43 lead before
a free throw by Dwight Holmes and
3-pointer by Barber tied the contest
at 47 with 2:15 remaining.
With 1:03 remaining, the Guins had
an opportunity to to ahead for the
first time since the opening minute,
but Vance Cooksey, who had made
26-of-29 free throws in the final
five minutes missed a pair of
charity tosses.
The Guins defense forced WSU to take
30 seconds off the shot clock, but
Brown's step-back 3-pointer over Mel
Johnson swished through with 31.5
seconds remaining.
YSU called a timeout with seven
seconds left to set up a final play,
but Barber's off balance 3-pointer
rimmed out just before time expired.
Leading the way for Wright State was Brown who had 14 points
while Graham finished with 10.
For the game, YSU shot 33.3 percent
(16-of-48) while Wright State
finished at a 48.8 percent clip
(21-of-43). WSU won the battle of
the boards 32-26. The Guins
attempted 19 free throws to the
Raiders' four, however YSU shot just
57.9 percent making 11 attempts.
