Individual Accomplishments and Team
Highlights
The
2008-09 Youngstown State men's
basketball season was full of many
impressive individual and team
accomplishments. Below is a list of
notable feats of the season:
• After being picked to finish 10th
in the Horizon League, the Penguins
finished sixth in the circuit and
hosted a first-round Horizon League
Tournament game for the second-time
in three seasons.
• Youngstown State tied a record for
most Horizon League wins in school
history (seven).
• The Penguins won four straight
Horizon League games for the first
time since joining the league in
2001-02.
• The Penguins played seven games
against teams that made the 2009
NCAA Tournament, including a 64-60
win over Cleveland State in front of
a nationally-televised audience on
ESPNU.
• Junior DeAndre Mays was named to
the Horizon League All-Newcomer
Team. He is the third player in the
last four years to be named to the
squad. Vytas Sulskis (2008) and
Keston Roberts (2006) were also
named to the league's all-newcomer
team.
• Senior Jack Liles finished his
career with 850 points with
564 career rebounds. He also ranks
third all-time with 116 career
blocked shots.
• Liles
played in 118 career games,
which ranks second all-time in
school history. He also started 92
times during his career, which ranks
fifth all-time.
• Junior
Sirlester Martin led the team and
ranked second in the Horizon League
with 7.3 rebounds per game. His 220
rebounds were the most since Quin
Humphrey hauled down 221 in 2006-07.
• Junior Kelvin Bright led the
Penguins and ranked 16th in the
Horizon League in scoring with 11.4
points per game. Bright also
averaged 11.2 points per game
against Horizon League opponents.
• Bright was named the Horizon
League Player of the Week on Jan. 12
after averaging 22.5 points
per game while shooting 45.5 percent
from the field and 80 percent from
the free-throw line. He scored
20-plus points in both contests
against UIC (Jan 8) and Loyola (Jan.
10).
•
Bright scored a game-high 23
points on 6-of-15 shooting from the
field, including three 3-pointers,
in YSU’s 80-70 win over UIC. He also
connected on 8-of-9 from the
free-throw line. Against Loyola,
Bright posted 22 points on 9-of-18
shooting from the floor and made
4-of-6 from the charity stripe.
•DeAndre
Mays ranked fifth in the Horizon
League with 3.5 assists per game. He
also ranked 20th in the league in
scoring with 10.7 points per game.
•
Sophomore Tom Parks connected on
40.3 percent of his 3-point attempts
which was good enough to rank
seventh in the Horizon League.
• Against Horizon League opponents,
Parks ranked third making 45.7
percent (21-of-46) of his 3-point
attempts.
• Sophomore Vytas Sulskis made 70
percent of his free throw attempts
(70-of-100), an improvement of 10.8
percentage points from his freshman
season.
• After two seasons, sophomore Vance
Cooksey owns a .782 career
free-throw percentage and ranks tied
for ninth all-time in school
