Out Road Trip Against A-10 Member
Charlotte
The Youngstown State men’s
basketball team (2-7, 0-2 Horizon
League) closes out its three-game
road stretch when it visits
Atlantic-10 Conference member
Charlotte, Sunday, Dec. 21.
Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Halton Arena in Charlotte,
N.C. The game will be broadcast on
106.1 WBBG-FM due to broadcast
conflicts with the Cleveland Browns
and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Penguins
are coming off their first road
victory of the season after holding
off High Point, 64-61, on Friday
evening. It was also YSU’s first
victory over a Division I opponent
this season.
Senior Jack Liles recorded his second double-double of the
season with 14 points and 13
rebounds and junior Kelvin Bright
posted 14 points and dished out four
assists. Junior DeAndre Mays also
reached double figures with 13
points. He also grabbed seven
rebounds with five assists and four
steals.
Bright leads the Penguins with 14.1 points per game while
sophomore Vytas Sulskis is second on
the squad with 10.9 points per game.
Junior Sirlester Martin leads the
team and ranks second in the Horizon
League with 8.2 rebounds per game.
Charlotte, who has not played since Dec.10, enters the
contest with a 3-6 record but has
won its last two contests. The 49ers
defeated Southern Illinois, 66-64 on
Dec. 6, and Mississippi State,
70-64, on Dec. 10. This is also
Charlotte’s first home game since
Nov. 22 when it lost to Clemson,
71-70.
Lamont Mack leads three 49ers scoring in double figures with
12 points per game. Mack is also
second on the squad in rebounding
with 5.1 rebounds per game. Ian
Anderson and An’Juan Wilderness are
also averaging in double digits with
10.8 and 10.7 points per game,
respectively.
This is the first meeting between Youngstown State and

After eight-day layoff for Christmas, the Penguins return
home to host Division II Lock Haven,
Monday, Dec. 29.
Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center and will be

Liles Net Second Double-Double
Senior Jack Liles turned in his best
performance of the season when
posted his second double-double of
the season with 14 points and 13
rebounds in a 64-61 win over High
Point on Friday evening. Liles
connected on 6-of-12 from the field
and grabbed seven offensive
rebounds. He also tallied a blocked
shot and a steal.
Rebillot Nabs First Career Start
Senior Zack Rebillot started the
first game of his career on Friday
against High Point. Rebillot scored
four points and grabbed four
rebounds against the Panthers. He
also became the first walk-on to
start since Billy Clapper started on
Senior Night in 2005.
Bright Continues to Shine
Over the last four games, junior
Kelvin Bright has been almost
unstoppable. During that span,
Bright is averaging 18.8 points per
game while 46.4 percent from the
field and 54.2 percent from behind
the 3-point arc. The Silver Spring,
Md., native scored 21 points against
Kent State (Dec. 15) on 8-of-13
shooting from the field, including
three 3-pointers. Bright also became
the second YSU player this season to
score 20-or-more points in
consecutive games. He scored a
career-high 27 points against Butler
on Dec. 6.
Cooksey Impressive Against Kent
State
Sophomore Vance Cooksey turned in
the best performance of his career
against Kent State on Monday
evening. The Chicago, Ill., native
scored a career-high 24 points on
8-of-9 shooting from the floor and
7-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Cooksey’s eight made field goals
also set a career high. He also
dished out five assists.
Liles Still Streakin’
Youngstown State senior Jack Liles
has played in 91 consecutive games,
dating back to the 2005-06 season.
Liles, who has played in 97 career
games, needs 316 points, 39 rebounds
and seven blocks to become the first
player in school history to reach
1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100
blocks in a career. Liles also ranks
third all-time with 93 career
blocked shots.
Finding The Range
Since starting the season shooting
just 2-of-31 from the 3-point line
after the first two games, the
Penguins have really honed in from
the arc. Over the last seven
contests, the Penguins are shooting
50-of-128 for a .391 3-point
percentage. Twice the Guins have
made 10 3-pointers in a game
(Allegheny, 11/22, and Valparaiso,
12/4) and are averaging 7.8
3-pointers made per game over the
last six contests.
Bright Hits For Career High
Junior Kelvin Bright scored a
career-high 27 points in YSU’s 78-71
loss to defending Horizon League
champion Butler on Dec. 6. Bright
went 9-of-16 from the floor,
including making a career-best five
3-pointers. Bright also scored 13
points on 4-of-9 shooting with three
treys against Valparaiso on Dec. 4.
Cooksey Takes Care
Sophomore Vance Cooksey has been on
of the best in the league at taking
care of the basketball. The 6-foot
guard ranks third in the Horizon
League in assists-to-turnover ratio
at 2.0. Cooksey has dished out 24
assists and committed just 12
turnovers in eight games.
Martin The Glass Cleaner
Junior Sirlester Martin has been a
presence on the glass for Youngstown
State all season. Martin leads the
team and ranks second in the Horizon
League with 8.2 rebounds per game.
He has twice grabbed 11 rebounds in
a game (11 vs. Buffalo, 11/15, 11
vs. Valpo, 12/4) and has hauled down
at least four boards in every
contest. Over the last five games,
Martin has grabbed 47 rebounds for
an average of 9.4 rebounds per game.
Guins Second in Rebounding
As a team, Youngstown State ranks
second in the league in rebounding
with 37.2 rebounds per game. The
Guins also lead the league in
offensive rebounds with 14.4
offensive rebounds per game. The
Penguins rank sixth in the circuit
in defensive rebounds with 22.4
defensive rebounds per game.
Sulskis Has 20-20 Vision
For the first time in his career,
sophomore Vytas Sulskis recorded
back-to-back 20-point performances
after scoring 22 points against
Saint Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 29.
Sulskis also scored a season-high 24
points against Robert Morris on Nov.
25. Sulskis also became the first
player to score at least 20 points
in consecutive games since Quin
Humphrey scored 20 against Eastern
Kentucky (Feb. 17) and 35 against
Wright State (Feb. 22) during the
2006-07 season.
Tis The Season
Through the first eight games of the
season, Youngstown State has been
one of the most generous team in the
Horizon League. The Penguins rank
third in the circuit with 14.6
assists per game. DeAndre Mays ranks
seventh in the league with 3.6
assists per game.
Guins Sign All-Stater Lamar
McKnight
Head Coach Jerry Slocum announced
that Lamar McKnight, a Division IV
Third-Team All-Ohio selection, has
signed a National Letter of Intent
during the early signing period to
join the Youngstown State men’s
basketball program. McKnight, a
6-foot-5, 205-pound forward from
Bedford St. Peter Chanel High
School, averaged a double-double as
a junior with 17 points and 10
rebounds per game while leading
Chanel to the Division IV state
Final Four. McKnight also posted
three blocks per game and shot more
than 50 percent from the field. |
