Points as Men's Basketball
Falls to Maryland, 73-49
College Park, Md. -- Senior
Jack Liles scored 12 points and
grabbed eight rebounds and junior
DeAndre Mays added 11 points and
seven boards but the Youngstown
State men's basketball team dropped
a 73-49 decision to Maryland on
Tuesday evening at the Comcast
Center.
Junior
Sirlester Martin just missed his
second straight double-double with
nine points and seven boards.
A Maryland
native, Liles was 4-of-7 from the
field, 4-of-8 from the free-throw
line, had seven offensive boards,
three assists and two blocks in the
return to his homestate. Tuesday was
also Liles' birthday.
The Penguins
(0-2) committed 23 turnovers, which led to
25 Terrapin points, shot just 33
percent from the floor (19-of-57)
and did not make a 3-pointer for the
first time since 2003. YSU dominated
the boards grabbing 45 to the
Terrapins' 34.
The Penguins
scored the first six points of the
game and owned an 8-2 advantage at
the 16:08 mark after a jumper by
Liles, two jumpers by Mays and two
free throws from Liles.
After two
buckets by Maryland (2-0) cut the lead to
two, 8-6, another layup by Liles
extended the lead back to 10-6 with 13:39 remaining.
The Terrapins
scored the next six points to take a
12-10 lead and owned a 14-12 edge
before a jumper by Mays knotted the
contest at the 8:55 mark of the
half.
Maryland's Jin
Soo Kim nailed a 3-pointer to give
the Terps a three-point cushion,
17-14, but Dallas Blocker's layup
cut the deficit back to one, 17-16,
with 8:15 to go.
Maryland then
scored 14 straight points to push
its lead to 15 points and the Guins
went scoreless for six minutes.
Kelvin Bright
hit a jumper with 2:17 remaining but
Maryland scored the next six points
to take a 37-18 lead into the
lockerroom.
Maryland's
Greivis Vasquez led all scorers with
28 points and Eric Hayes added 13.
After scoring 18 first-half points, the Penguins scored 31 in
the second half. The closest YSU
could get in the second half was
44-26 with 14:36 remaining in the
contest. Both teams shot identical
12-of-27 from the floor (44.4
percent) in the final stanza.
The Penguins
take on Allegheny this Saturday at 7:35 p.m. as the second part
of men's and women's basketball
doubleheader at the Beeghly Center. |
