    At the ninth annual Youngstown State University Penguin Club Scholarship Ring Dinner, YSU was proud to honor another former student-athlete who has gone from an outstanding Penguin athletic career to an outstanding professional business career.
    Former baseball standout Steve Bartolin returned to the valley to be honored as a 1999 co-Penguin of the Year, sharing this honor with Hall of Fame Coach Dom Rosselli.
    Steve's highlighted baseball career with the Penguins is shadowed by his success off the field in the corporate world. Steve has traded in his title of "starting pitcher" for President and Chief Executive Officer of The Broadmoor Hotel Inc., a Mobil Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond destination resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If running one of the finest resorts in the world isn't enough; he also holds the title of President and CEO of the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Company, Cog Land and Development Company and The Broadmoor Golf Club, Inc.
    With that Midwest work ethic in tact, his demanding and rewarding schedule also includes Director positions on the corporate boards of The Oklahoma Publishing Company and Ashworth Inc. The Oklahoma Publishing Company holds 80 percent of The Broadmoor, and Ashworth is the leading golf apparel manufacturer in the world. He also lends his business acumen to 13 boards of various non-profit organizations.
    Holding true to his "hard work pays off" philosophy, Steve took positions that would teach him first hand how large organizations runs, giving him the advantage of inside knowledge needed to make those organizations run more smoothly once he made it to the top. After graduating from YSU in 1975, Steve took an entry-level position in the Golf Club bag room at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Working his way to the top included positions in golf operations, front desk, room reservations and catering. Five years of hard work paid off as he was offered and accepted the position of Director of Convention Services at the Opryland Hotel in 1980.
    In 1987 Steve returned to The Greenbrier as the General Manager. Four years in that position gave him the experience necessary to be offered the position of President of The Broadmoor. Steve accepted and has been with The Broadmoor since 1991.
    The Broadmoor is a 700 room, 3000-acre destination resort that is the longest running recipient of the Mobil Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond awards. The Broadmoor boasts three championship golf courses, an award-winning world class Spa, an outstanding tennis program, 19 restaurants and lounges and over 110,000 square feet of meeting space. Located at the foot of the Colorado Rockies, The Broadmoor, dubbed "Grand Dame of the Rockies," is truly one of the most picturesque places in the United States.
    For his continuing dedication to service and first class treatment, Steve was honored by his peers as the 1997 Resort Executive of the Year.
    The dedication that Steve exudes in the corporate world was no less during his tenure as a student-athlete at YSU. An outstanding base- ball player for the Penguins from 1970-72, Steve missed his senior season after being drafted by the Detroit Tigers. The left-hander from Hubbard High School played on some of the best teams in school history.
    Steve recalls one of his most memorable games on April 6, 1972, when the lefty tossed his first career no-hitter at Pemberton Park. On that chilly and windy afternoon, Steve blanked Case Western Reserve, 7-0, in the second game of a doubleheader, fanning 12 and walking six.
    Inducted into YSU's Hall of Fame in 1987, Steve's career with the Penguins speaks for itself. One no-hitter, three one-hitters and in a 1972, he struck out the first 14 batters faced in a game and did not allow a ball in play until the firth inning.
    His hopes of going to the Show were cut short when a shoulder injury finished his career in baseball. That did not stop this determined man. He returned to YSU in 1975 to finish his course work, receiving a degree in business. That business degree and determination has led Steve to a prosperous career and one of the finest business minds in the hotel industry today.
