2009 Football Alumni Spring Reunion A Big Success

A warm and sunny Friday afternoon made the 2009 edition of the Football Alumni Reunion Weekend another tremendous success again thanks to the former players and current Penguin coaches and players.
Friday's golf outing at Oak Tree Country Club saw gorgeous weather after the past two weeks had been brutal spring conditions for all Penguins. More than 90 participants took part in the golfing. As a group, we welcomed new assistant coaches Benyard Jones and Michael Zordich to the Penguin football family.
Thursday's spaghetti dinner at Mr. Anthony's in Boardman was outstanding as former Guin and current Lane College Head Coach Trent Boykin spoke to the group. The YSU coaching staff and the 15 seniors were also in attendance.
On the course, the foursome of Ray Briya (1965-67), Pete Brittain, Randy Barker (1980-81) and Frank Pokorny (1982-84) won the event with an impressive round of 61 during the best-ball format. That foursome also won the event in 2007 and were second in 2005. Results from last year's event were not reported.
Finishing second was the foursome of Bob Ferranti (1969-72), Keith Snoddy (1977-79), Bernie Bartoszek (1969-71) and Tom Franklin (1966-69).
The skill prize winners were Mike McGlone (1985-88) who had the longest drive on No. 6, Peter Davila (1995-97) who had the longest made putt on No. 8, Kelly West who registered the longest drive on No. 10, Scott Jacobs 1981-83) who was closest to the pin on No. 14 and Doug Brunot who had the longest putt on No. 18.
Raffles were held for a set of Taylor Made R7 irons, a Nike SQ 2009 Dymo Driver, a Taylor Made Burner Driver, four Pittsburgh Pirates tickets (game of choice), Pirates Gift Basket, YSU autographed football, two YSU football tickets in the Miladore Family Penguin Club loge and a Pittsburgh Steelers autographed football.
Following the outing, the group headed to Stambaugh Stadium for a dinner in the DeBartolo Stadium Club. For the sixth consecutive year, the Outback Steakhouse provided an incredible meal and everyone left no scrapes behind.
The Red-White Spring Game was a nailbitter as the Offense won the Jersey Scrimmage over the defense by a 35-34 margin. The contest went down to the final play, but the offense was able to hang on.
The next Football Alumni Club gathering is on July 12 at the Bocce Social hosted at the MVR.
