2005 "Penguin of the Year"
Helen Stambaugh
Helen R. Stambaugh was born in Campbell, Ohio. She graduated
from Lowellville High School in 1938
and from Youngstown College with an
associate degree in business in
1944. She began working for
Stambaugh Hardwood Lumber Company in
1944 as an office manager and
administrative assistant to the
president, staying there until 1969.
During Mr. Stambaugh's semi-retirement, Mrs. Stambaugh had
full authority in making management
decisions. After leaving the lumber
company, Mrs. Stambaugh worked for
14 years for two separate retirement
communities - Park Vista, where she
became executive director, and then
in the same capacity for the
Lutheran Retirement Center until
1979. She has been involved with
Park Vista's Apple Butter Festival
since its inception over 35 years
ago.
Mrs. Stambaugh is involved in community service with the
YWCA; where she served on the Women
of the Year Committee. She served as
President of the Staff Club Chapter
of the Federation of Women's Clubs;
Treasurer of the Quota Club of
Youngstown; as a member of the
boards of the Youngstown Hearing and
Speech Center and the Salvation Army
as well as serving as the Treasurer
of it's Women's Auxiliary. Mrs.
Stambaugh serves on the Executive
Council of the Boy Scouts of America
and is a member of the Service Corps
of Retired Executives (SCORE). She
is also a member of the Ohio
Presbyterian Retirement Services
Foundation Board, serving on its
Planning and Communications
Committee.
Mrs. Stambaugh is Treasurer of St. John Lutheran Church,
where she is an active, dedicated
member.
