Youngstown --
Youngstown State Head Soccer Coach Liz Bartley announced on
Monday that eight student-athletes
have signed a National Letter of
Intent to play soccer for the
Penguins.
Signing with Youngstown State are midfielder/defender Erin
Moehle (Medina, Ohio),
midfielder Crystal Thiry
(Hubbard, Ohio), midfielder Katie
Jacobs (Whitehouse, Ohio),
midfielder Kim Jugenheimer
(Hubbard, Ohio),
goalkeeper/midfielder Lauren
Ausmundson (Chesterland, Ohio),
goalkeeper Mia Railing
(Wheeling, W.Va.), forward Hannah
Lawther (Moundsville, W.Va.) and
defender Casey Dick
(Wellsburg, W.Va.), Bartley said.
"This class is big in size and big in success," Bartley said. "I am
counting on each of these players to
come in and contribute to our
program immediately. They will help
us at all positions and by adding
these eight players our team will be
much improved next season."
Jacobs, whose older sister Jennifer plays for the Penguins, helped
lead Anthony Wayne High School to a
league runner-up finish last year.
She also plays for the Toledo
Celtics Club Program. Moehle played
midfielder and defender at Medina
High School helping her team win the
Pioneer Conference title in the
fall. In 1997, she was part of the
Medina team that won the state
championship.
Thiry and Jugenheimer were teammates at Hubbard High School. Thiry
was the Division II District Player
of the Year and was named first-team
all-district, first-team all-county
and first-team all-conference. She
was also the team’s most valuable
player and a three-year
letterwinner. Jugenheimer was an
all-district pick after scoring 10
goals and recording nine assists as
a senior. Her junior season she
scored 21 goals and had six assists.
Ausmundson will be counted on to play goalkeeper or in the
midfield. In her high school career
she finished with a school-record 52
assists. She was named a second-team
all-conference performer and an
honorable-mention all-city pick.
The Penguins also added a trio of players from West Virginia. Dick,
Lawther and Railing all signed their
letters together to play at YSU.
Dick finished with 12 goals and 12 assists as a senior and was
named her team’s MVP. She was a
three-time All-OVAC selection and a
two-time All-Valley honoree. Lawther
is the most-prolific scorer in state
history with 170 goals in her career
after scoring an amazing 60 goals in
21 games last season (2.86 goals per
game). She also recorded 29 assists
during her senior season in helping
lead John Marshall High School to a
17-2-2 record and its first-ever
appearance in the state rankings.
She was a first-team all-state
selection.
Railing was the starting goalkeeper on three consecutive West
Virginia state championship squads
at Wheeling Park High School. She
finished her senior season with 87
saves and a 0.84 goals-against
average. She holds the school record
for shutouts in a single season (13)
and shares the mark for fewest goals
allowed (10).
