Soccer: Three Local Standouts Highlight YSU Signees
Youngstown --
Youngstown State Soccer Head Coach
Elizabeth Bartley announced Friday
that four players have signed
National Letters of Intent to
continue their soccer careers at
Youngstown State.
Signing with the Penguins are Jamie Granata (Champion,
Ohio/Champion H.S), Corey Cardone
(Hampton H.S.), Laura Mauer (Poland,
Ohio/Poland H.S), and Rachel
Cubellis (Girard, Ohio/Girard H.S.)
At Champion High
School, Granta was named team
captain and received first-team
all-district and All-TAC-8, honors.
"Jamie gives us size and depth
defensively," Bartley said.
"She is hard-nosed and is a smart
defender."
Cardone, a standout from Allison Park, Pa., will strengthen
the team's offensive production.
"Corey gives depth to us
offensively." Bartley said.
"We look to have her help maintain
possession as well as distribute and
score."
Mauer, a local standout and captain from Poland, will see
action as a defender for the
Penguins. Mauer was a
first-team All-MAC selection as a
senior and a second-team
all-district pick on the 2002 Poland
district championship team. "Laura
is aggressive, strong, and has a
great attitude."
Cubellis, last season, was named High School Defensive Player
of the Year. "She has a great
attitude and a great work ethic."
This signing class joins two West Virginia standouts, Maddie
Lawther (Moundsville, W.Va.) and
Shirley Hartness (Parkersburg, W.
Va.), who both previously signed
with the Penguins this year. |
