UWGB Breezes Past YSU, 7-1

The UW-Green Bay secured at least the #3 spot in the upcoming 2003 Horizon League championships with its 7-1 win over the Youngstown State soccer team on Friday night at Phoenix Field.
    UWGB's Kristin Smith and Gwen Zimmerman each had two goals while, Kari Olsen had a goal and two assists and Stephanie Gross tallied a career-best three assists in the win.
    The Phoenix got on the board in the eighth minute when Gross set up Sarah Oligney from the left side. Gross would then combine with Dixie Schubert in the 20th minute and again with Smith in the 34th for her trio of helpers in the first half.
    UW-Green Bay could not keep the shutout, as Youngstown State forward and Green Bay native Katie Deprey scored her first of the season when she gathered a misplayed ball in the 45th minute.
    After a quick goal by Smith in the 46th minute regained the four-goal lead, Zimmerman finished the Phoenix scoring with strikes in the 47th and 54th minutes for her sixth and seventh goals of the year.
    The Phoenix finished with 26 shots to Youngstown State's four, including a 15-2 ledger in shots on goal.  With the loss the Penguins fall to 1-14 overall and 0-4 in the Horizon League.  With the win the Phoenix improve to 7-6-1, 4-2-0. 
    The Penguins return to action on Sunday, Oct. 26 when they travel to Milwaukee to play the Panthers at noon.
