YSU Tunes Up For Season With Overtime
Scrimmage Win
Wheeling, W. Va. --
Sophomore Brittny Humphrey scored
the game-winning goal in overtime on
Tuesday night as the Youngstown
State soccer team beat Wheeling
Jesuit 2-1 in a preseason scrimmage.
YSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second half on a goal
by sophomore Kara Vezza. Senior
Sadie Brookman was credited with an
assist on Vezza's score in the 66th
minute. The Cardinals tied the game
in the 80th minute to force the
overtime period.
In overtime, Humphrey scored the game winner off a
corner kick by freshman Jenna Fink.
The Penguins outshot Wheeling Jesuit 9-4 and both
teams had two corners each.
"Overall, we didn't play as well as I would have liked to
play," Head Coach Anthony James
said. "I felt they were experiencing
some first-game jitters at times.
But it was a great experience for
all of our players especially our
freshman class. We were able to try
numerous kids in various positions."
Youngstown State opens the regular season on Friday when it
travels to face Division II foe
Northern Michigan in Marquette,
Mich. YSU is at home on Sunday,
August 28 against Robert Morris. |
