Soccer: YSU Shut Out in Penguin
Classic, 2-0
Youngstown --
After another defensive showdown, the
Youngstown State soccer team was not
able to find the net in the final
game of the Penguin Classic against
VMI in Sunday afternoon's 2-0 loss
at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Penguins came out strong with four shots on goal by
forward Christi Williams, but VMI
(1-3) put the first goal of the day
on the board just over 21 minutes
into the game. The score came from
forward Alexa Bernas scored with
assists from midfieler Erin Squires
and Karen Bill at 21:49.
Goalie Jessica Yarter helped keep the Penguins within
striking distance with her seven
saves.
YSU came back with four more shots in the second half, but
still managed to come up short. VMI
midfielder Colleen Redmond scored
the final goal at 52:22 making the
final score 2-0.
In the other match on Sunday, Binghamton and Manhattan played
to a 2-2 tie in the championship
game. Binghamton jumped out to a 2-0
lead before Manhattan scored twice
to tie the game.
The Penguins will be back in action this Friday at home as
they take on Kent State.
