Penguins Second
Half Rally Leads to 3-2 Victory over
The Citadel
Charleston,
S.C. -- The Youngstown
State soccer team concluded
the Citadel
Adidas Soccer Classic knocking off
the Bulldogs, 3-2, with two late goals on
Sunday afternoon at WLI field in
Charleston, S.C. Junior Christi
Williams scored her first career
goal for the Penguins as well as the
game winning score. With the win the
Penguins improve to 2-6.
YSU scored just four minutes into the
game off a cross from Williams to
freshman Jodi Bowlen marking her
first goal for the season. Citadel
freshman Rachelle Ornelas evened the
scored up 14 minutes later on an
unassisted goal that went into the
upper right corner of the net.
The Penguins defense helped keep the
score tied until the 53:37 mark as
senior Holli Knox headed the ball in
the net off a corner kick putting
the Bulldogs up 2-1.
YSU's offense was fired up and pressed into Bulldog territory at 74
minutes of play. Freshman Jordan Gapczynski capitalized on a pass
from Carrie Wack to tie the game at
2-2.
The 'Guins then went for the win four minutes later. Williams
sealed the fate of the Bulldogs off
a pass from Jodi Bowlen giving YSU
the one-goal victory.
YSU outshot The Citadel 17 to 15 while Caitlin
Bodzioney was credited with seven
saves.
Freshmen Bodzioney and Bowlen were also named to the Citadel
Adidas Classic All-tournament team
for their efforts in the weekend
match-ups. Sophomores Alex Lee and
Keeley Rice received honors as well.
Head Coach Anthony James said he was very
pleased with the YSU's diligent
effort late in the game.
"The team could have easily given up in the second half, but
they came from behind for the win," James
said. The
Penguins will play again on
September 29 at home against
Valparaiso at 4 p.m.. |
