Penguins Down Cleveland State 3-1; Will Face Loyola in Horizon League Tournament
Cleveland, Ohio --
The Youngstown State soccer team
concluded the regular season with a victory over Horizon League opponent
Cleveland State. Jordan Gapczynski scored her fifth goal of the season while
Natalie Brady and Keeley Rice were credited with their first goals. With the
win, YSU finishes the season 3-13 and 1-6 in the league.
Jodi Bowlen took the first shot of the game that was
saved by CSU goalkeeper Ashley Kindwell. It was Rice's penalty kick that gave
the Penguins the 1-0 advantage at 24:19. Sarah Crafton tried to put the Penguins
up by two with a shot the was wide of the net. Cleveland State had eight shots
in the first half, but could not put any points on the board.
Brady continued the scoring drive 14 seconds into the second
half. Brady connected with the pass from Mariah Snyder for the breakaway shot on
the left side.
Bowlen had
her second shot of the night that
was high. Sade Tate fired back with
another attempt for the 'Guins that
was saved.
Gapczynski gave the Penguins the 3-0 lead twenty minutes
later with a high shot through of
the goalkeeper's reach. Tessa
Brookman was credited with the
assist.
Heather Wagner scored the Vikings only point of the game at
76:12. Lisa Conway made the final
scoring attempt at 88:30 that was
high, but time ran out for
Cleveland's come back as YSU secured
the win.
Head Coach Anthony James said that the team played a very
impressive game.
"They knew the game plan and
executed it very well", said James.
YSU will play in
first round of the the Horizon
League Tournament on Saturday
at Loyola.
