YSU Drops Close
Match to Francis Marion, Gapzynski Credited
Second Goal
Charleston,
S.C. -- The Youngstown
State women's soccer team opened the
first day of play in the Citadel
Adidas Soccer Classic in Charleston,
S.C. YSU (1-6) lost in the first
round of the invitational to Francis
Marion (3-3) with a score of 2-1
while freshman Jordan Gapczynski
made her second career goal.
YSU's defense came out strong in the
first half stopping all six of the
Patriots shots.
Head Coach Anthony James said that
the heat was a major factor in the
game.
"They were on our heels the whole first half", said James.
"It was also 82 degrees and we just
needed to settle down and make some
adjustments for the second half."
Francis Marion came out with two quick goals in the beginning of the
second period. Junior Ashley
Fortune's score came just 36 seconds
into the second half off the assist
from freshman Angela Salem. Salem
followed with the Patriots second
goal at 52:48 into the game.
Freshman Kirby Senard was credited
with the assist.
The Penguins still kept the momentum going totaling 13
shots for the game. Freshman Jodi
Bowlen had a total of 3 shots for
the 'Guins while Jordan Gapczynski
had five.
It was also Gapczynski late rebound shot on goal that put the
Penguins on the board at the 82nd
minute of play. The Penguins
continued to fight to the last
minute as Gapczynski made a shot
that was wide in the 84th minute as
well a high shot in the 85th minute.
James also added that they two teams were very evenly
matched. "We finished the game
strong and really dominated the
second half in shots," said James.
YSU goalkeeper Caitlin Bodzioney finished the game
strong with seven saves while
Francis Marion goalie Jacque Sutphin
had four. The Penguins will
be back in action in the Citadel Adidas
Soccer Classic as they play The
Citadel on Sunday at 11 a.m. |
