East Tennessee Slips by Penguins 3-2
in Final Match-up of Gamecock
Classic
Jacksonville, Ala.
-- The Penguins scored two goals
against the Buccaneers and took the
lead in the second half, but a
header goal at 77:15 put East
Tennessee up by one. The late goal
gave the Buccaneers the 3-2 win over
the 'Guins. For their performances
in the classic, Carrie Wack and Alex
and Caitlin Lee were named to the
all-tournament team.
Freshman Lauren Brennan was credited
with four shots, including three
shots on goal and her first
collegiate goal. Jordan Gapczynski
attempted three shots in the first
half with two on goal. Both shots
were saved by ETSU's goalkeeper Erin
Bilyeu.
Kelly Brinkman put the Buccaneers on
the board just before half time with
her unassisted goal at 41:21 mark.
Amanda Polles had one last attempt
to tie the score before the end of
the first with a shot that was
saved.
Carrie
Wack fired out the first shot of the
second half that was quickly
stopped. Less than two minutes later
Jenna Fink shot a free kick from 19
yards out that flew right past
Bilyeu and tied the game at 1-1.
It was Brennan's goal 10 minutes
later that gave the Penguins the 2-1
lead. Nina Pannoni was credited with
the assist.
East
Tennessse attempted a shot that was
saved by YSU goalkeeper Caitlin
Bodzioney and a shot that was
blocked before Rachel Layer
rebounded the ball to put the
Buccaneers up 2-1.
Brennan and Jodi Bowlen each took a
shot after Layer's goal but it Terri
Millers' final score of the game
that gave East Tennessee the 3-2 win
over Youngstown State.
Bodzioney and Bilyeu each finished
with eight saves.
Head Coach Anthony James said that
the team came out strong in the
second half, but the high
temperatures played a part in the
game.
"We played well over all," said
James. "I could tell that near the
end of the game that the heat was
starting to have a negative affect
on the them, but I still felt that
the team had a strong finish."
Youngstown State will host the home
opener against Robert Morris at 7
p.m. on Wednesday. |
