Brennan Ties School Record in Penguins' 5-1 Victory Over
Howard
Youngstown -- Freshman Lauren Brennan tied the school's
record for most goals in a game with
four in the final match of the
Penguin Classic on Sunday afternoon
at Stambaugh Stadium. Brennan shares
the honor with Kim Jugenheimer, who
established the record in 2003
against Delaware State. Brennan also
broke the school's record for most
points in a game with nine. The 5-1
win over Howard marks the Penguins
first victory of the season.
Jordan Gapczynski put the Penguins' first point of the
afternoon on the board at 23 minutes
into the game. Brennan assisted Gapczynski on her first goal of the
season. All three of Gapczynkski's
points for the game were on goal.
Brennan scored her first two goals
of the first half within less than a
minute of each other. Carrie Wack
was credited with the assist on the
first goal. Brennan tallied her
second goal on a fast break down the
field.
YSU's defense held the Bison to just
three shots in the first half, only
one of which was on goal.
Howard's Briana Gamble fired three
quick shots in attempt to even the
score early in the second half. Each
shot was saved by goalkeeper Caitlin
Bodzioney.
Brennan netted her third goal of the
afternoon giving the Guins the 4-0
advantage over Howard. Less than
five minutes later, senior Tessa
Brookman's pass led to Brennan's
record-tying fourth goal of the
game.
The Penguins only gave up one goal
to Howard at 77:54 into the match.
YSU tied Howard with 18 shots and
outnumbered the Bison with shots on
goal 14 to eight.
For the game, Nina Pannoni, Carrie
Wack and Jenna Fink all finished
with two shots. Brookman and Taylor
Pickens each had one shot while
Amanda Polles and Erin Gimour both
finished with one shot on goal.
Head Coach Anthony James said that
team fought hard throughout the
entire game.
"I was excited to see how well
Lauren did in this weekend," said
James. "I was also glad
that our team got our first win at
home. I feel that we will be able to
go into our next game with
confidence."
