Soccer:
Panthers Get Past Penguins, 2-0

Youngstown State
(0-1) opened the season against the
Pittsburgh Panthers on Friday night at
Founders Field. Pitt managed to
score one goal against the Penguins
in the first half. YSU inadvertently
gave the Panthers the second point
early in the second half when a shot
bounced off a Penguin defender into
the net making the final score 2-0.
Pitt sophomore Ashley Habbel opened
the game with a shot from 18 yards
out at 5:49 into the game.
Midfielder Natalie Brady fired back
with a shot that was saved by Alison
Finch. Jordan Gapczynski attempted a
shot that was just high of the net.
Freshman Lauren Brennan tried to
even the score just before the half,
but her shot was also saved.
The second half
kicked off with the Penguins
slipping one into its own net giving
the Panthers the 2-0 advantage.
YSU's defense only
allowed Pitt to take three shots in
the second half. YSU goalkeeper
Caitlin Bodzioney finished with a
total of six saves for the game.
Gapczyski made the final attempt to
even the score for the Penguins with
a shot on goal that was stopped in
the final minute of the game.
YSU will be back in action
on Friday as they travel to Alabama
to participate in the Gamecock
Soccer Classic. The Penguins will
face Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. |
