Youngstown State
Battles St. Francis (Pa.) to
Scoreless Tie
Youngstown --
Youngstown State and St. Francis
(Pa.) played for 110 minutes, but
neither could find the back of the
net as the teams finished with a
scoreless tie on Friday evening at
Stambaugh Stadium.
Freshman Lauren Brennan fired her fourth shot of the game on
a breakaway 31 seconds into the
second overtime, but SFU goal keeper
Jessica Boyer made the big save to
preserve the tie.
The Red Flash had one final attempt when Lauren Wolpert's
attempt sailed wide with 1:34 on the
clock.
Boyer also made a save on Jordan Gapczynski's shot 1:03 into
the first overtime, and Tessa
Brookman's shot sailed wide later in
the period.
The Penguins ended up outshooting the Red Flash 3-1 in
overtime.
YSU goal keeper Caitlin Bodzioney had an outstanding first
half, making six saves on SFU's nine
shots. The Penguins were held to one
shot, an attempt by Brennan at the
7:11 mark, by the Red Flash defense
in the first half.
Gapczynski took three of YSU's seven shots in the second
half, two of which were saved by
Boyer. Bodzioney tacked on another
five saves in the second period.
Gapczynski and Brennan tied for a team-high four shots, and
Brookman fired two. Natalie Brady
also had an attempt early in the
second half that went above the net.
Rachael Seibert had five of the 19 St. Francis (Pa.) shots,
and Katie Dougherty and Jessica
Meurer had three apiece.
Head Coach
Anthony James said that the game was
tough, but had a conference feel to
it.
"The team worked
hard tonight. They executed many of
the plays that we practiced during
the week very well," said James.
"It will take
effort like how we played tonight to
win in the Horizon League."
The tie was YSU's first since a 0-0 finish against Cleveland
State on Oct. 30, 2005.
YSU will play
again on Sunday at Canisius at 1
p.m.
