Soccer Hosts
Canisius, IPFW in Home Openers This
Weekend
After splitting a pair of games on
the road last weekend, the
Youngstown State soccer team host
Canisius, Friday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m.
at Stambaugh Stadium in the 2009
home opener. The Guins also host
IPFW on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Penguins picked up their
first win of the season on Sunday
downing Howard, 4-2, in Washington,
D.C. Sophomore Kara Cooper scored
two goals and assisted on another to
lead the Guins. Sophomore Geneva
Strelka scored a goal and added an
assist while senior Natalie Brady
scored her first goal of the season.
The Penguins also lost to Marist,
2-0, last Friday.
Scouting Canisius
Canisius opens the 2009 campaign
with its visit to The Ice Castle.
Last season, the Golden Griffs went
11-5-3, including a 4-3-2 mark in
road games. This will be the ninth
meeting between the Guins and Golden
Griffs with Canisius owning a 5-3
edge in the all-time series. In the
last meeting 2007, Canisius defeated
the Guins, 3-0, in Buffalo, N.Y. The
last YSU victory came in 2006 when
the Guins won, 1-0, at Stambaugh
Stadium.
Scouting IPFW
IPFW enters the week with an 0-1
record after dropping its
season-opener to Central Michigan,
4-0, last Saturday. The Mastodons
went 0-18-1 in 2008, including a 1-0
loss to the Penguins. This is the
fourth meeting between YSU and IPFW
with the Mastodons owning a slim 2-1
edge. IPFW won the first two outings
in 2004 and 2005 before the Guins
were victorious, 1-0, in Fort Wayne,
Ind., in 2008.
Cooper Sets Career Highs
Sophomore Kara Cooper set two
single-game career highs with her
two goals and five total points
against Howard on Sunday. Cooper
scored YSU's first two goals then
assisted on its third scored by
sophomore Geneva Strelka. She also
leads the team in shots with six,
including five against the Bison. In
all of 2008, Cooper took just seven
shots and scored one goal.
Brennan, Gapczynski Climbing
Career Goals Chart
Junior Lauren Brennan and senior
Jordan Gapczynski are two of the top
goal scorers in school history.
Brennan, who has 12 career goals,
ranks tied for third all-time while
Gapzcynski ranks tied for fifth with
eight goals.
Guins 1-1 For First Time Since
2002
With their win against Howard on
Sunday, the Guins are 1-1 for after
two games for the first time since
2002. With a win over Canisius on
Friday, YSU will be 2-1 after three
games for the first time since 1999.
If the Guins also beat IPFW, it will
mark the first time the Penguins
have started a campaign 3-1 since
1999.
Lemke Picks Up First Division
I Win
Head Coach Will Lemke picked up
his first Division I win in Sunday's
4-2 win over Howard. Lemke, who is
in his first year with the Penguins,
owns an overall record of 85-56-7
and is in his ninth year overall.
Strelka Picking Right Up From
2008
Sophomore Geneva Strelka is
picking up where she left off from
her freshman season. Strelka scored
a goal and added an assist in YSU's
4-2 win over Howard. Strelka now has
four career goals.
Brady Nets First Goal Since
2007
With her goal against Howard,
senior Natalie Brady posted her
first goal since the 2007 season
against Butler. Last season, Brady
tallied one assist. For her career,
she has three goals and two assists.
Snyder Sets Shutouts, GAA
Marks
In just her first full season in
the net, senior Mariah Snyder set
the school's single-season record
for most shutouts with four in 2008.
She also ranks second all-time with
four shutouts. Snyder also set the
school single-season record for
lowest goals-against average at
1.51.
Shoppin' at the "GAP"-czynski
Senior Jordan Gapczynski has
certainly given her full effort to
get in the scoring column during her
career. The native of Wexford, Pa.,
has led the team in shots in each of
her first three seasons and now
ranks second all-time with 130 career
shots. Her 52 shots in 2007 also
rank fifth on the single-season
list.
Kempton Named to All-Newcomer
Team
Last season, sophomore Kelsey
Kempton turned in an outstanding
rookie campaign for the Penguins.
Kempton, a defender, started all 20
games, scored two goals and assisted
on another for five points and was
named to the Horizon League
All-Newcomer Team.
Strelka Post Solid Frosh
Campaign
Sophomore Geneva Strelka also
recorded a strong freshman season
last year. Strelka tallied three
goals for a total of six points last
season and appeared in all 20 games.

Friday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m. in
Oxford, Ohio, before hosting Kent
State, Sunday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. in
