Soccer Opens
2009 Campaign, Lemke Era on Road
The Youngstown State soccer team
opens the 2009 campaign and the Will
Lemke era with a couple of road
contests this weekend. The Penguins
kickoff the season at Marist,
Friday, at 7 p.m. in Poughkeepsie,
N.Y. On Sunday, the Guins visit
Howard at 1 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
About the Penguins
The Penguins return 17
letterwinners and six starters from
last season's 4-14-2 squad,
including five of its top six
scorers, a school-record holding
goalkeeper and an all-league
defender. The Penguins are lead by a
cast of six seniors - Kate Bonn,
Rochelle Boone, Jodi Bowlen, Natalie
Brady, Jordan Gapczynski and Mariah
Snyder.
Bowlen and junior Lauren Brennan
led the Penguins with four goals
each last season, while Gapczynski
added two goals.
Scouting Marist
The Marist Red Foxes return 10
starters and 18 letterwinners from
the 2008 squad. Last season, Marist
posted a 5-14 record, including a
1-9 mark at home. Senior Kate Fox is
the squad's leading returning scorer
from a year ago when she scored
three goals and recorded an assist.
Scouting Howard
The Howard Bison return 12
letterwinners from last season's
4-11 squad. The Bison also return
their top two scorers from a year
ago - Natalie Williston and Rachael
Lee, who each scored three goals
last year.
Brennan, Gapczynski Climbing
Career Goals Chart
Junior Lauren Brennan and senior
Jordan Gapczynski are two of the top
goal scorers in school history.
Brennan, who has 12 career goals,
ranks tied for third all-time while
Gapzcynski ranks tied for fifth with
eight goals.
Snyder Sets Shutouts, GAA
Marks
In just her first full season in
the net, senior Mariah Snyder set
the school's single-season record
for most shutouts with four in 2008.
She also ranks second all-time with
four shutouts. Snyder also set the
school single-season record for
lowest goals-against average at
1.51.
Shoppin' at the "GAP"-czynski
Senior Jordan Gapczynski has
certainly given her full effort to
get in the scoring column during her
career. The native of Wexford, Pa.,
has led the team in shots in each of
her first three seasons and ranks
third all-time with 127 career
shots. Her 52 shots in 2007 also
rank fifth on the single-season
list.
Kempton Named to All-Newcomer
Team
Last season, sophomore Kelsey
Kempton turned in an outstanding
rookie campaign for the Penguins.
Kempton, a defender, started all 20
games, scored two goals and assisted
on another for five points and was
named to the Horizon League
All-Newcomer Team.
Strelka Post Solid Frosh
Campaign
Sophomore Geneva Strelka also
recorded a strong freshman season
last year. Strelka tallied three
goals for a total of six points last
season and appeared in all 20 games.

The Penguins take on Canisius,
Friday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. in their
home opener at Stambaugh Stadium.
The Guins also host IPFW, Sunday,
Aug. 30, at 1 p.m. |
