Softball Closes Regular Season with
Three-Game Series at Green Bay
The
Youngstown State softball team
(11-33, 5-14 Horizon League) closes
out the 2008 regular season with a
three-game Horizon League series
against Green Bay (8-22, 2-8 Horizon
League), May 3-4, in Green Bay, Wis.
The Guins and the
Phoenix will play a doubleheader on
Saturday starting at 2 p.m. (EDT)
and a single game on Sunday
beginning at Noon (EDT).
About the Phoenix
Green Bay is currently 8-22 overall
and 2-8 in the Horizon League. The
Phoenix is coming off a pair of
losses to Big Ten member Minnesota,
4-0, 8-0 on Wednesday. Leading the
Phoenix is Mollie Kaebisch with a
.297 batting average. Anna Bluemel
leads the Phoenix pitching staff
with a 5-9 record with a 3.80
earned-run average.
Bedra Claims Second POW Award
Senior McKenzie
Bedra picked up her second career
Player of the Week award after she
led Youngstown State to a 3-4 record
last week. The YSU senior posted a
.524 batting average with four home
runs, a double, 10 runs batted in
and stole her first base of the
season. On April 23 Bedra turned in
a 3-for-4 performance in game two
against Saint Francis (Pa.) as she
hit a home run, a double and drove
in five. In YSU’s 7-2 win over
Valparaiso on April 26, she hit two
homeruns and drove in four. Bedra
also tied the school’s single-season
home run record (10) with a two-run
shot in a 13-5 loss to Valparaiso.
In addition, the Ohio native became
YSU’s all-time leader in RBIs.
Last Time Out
Freshman Rochelle Vanyi broke the
YSU single-season home run record
with her 11th of the season in game
one and senior McKenzie Bedra tied
the mark in game two, but the
Penguins dropped a doubleheader to
Pittsburgh, 11-3, 8-2, on Tuesday
afternoon.
Guins Set Home Run Mark
With two home runs against
Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon, the
Guins extended the school's team
single-season home run record to 38.
The old record of 33 was set in 2003
and tied by the 2006 squad.
Bedra, Vanyi Set New Mark, Tied
for Third
Not only did senior McKenzie Bedra
and freshman Rochelle Vanyi surpass
the former YSU single-season home
run record, they each moved into a
tie for third place in the Horizon
League statistics with 11 home runs.
