Klonowski, Thomas, Cale Power Softball to Split Against Toledo

Canfield, Ohio -- Sophomore Kim Kllonowski went 5-for-7 on the day with two home runs, a double and seven runs batted in, and junior Cheryl Cale tossed a complete-game four hitter in an 11-2 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader split against Toledo on Wednesday afternoon at McCune Park. The Penguins dropped the opener, 12-4.

Youngstown State improves to 6-24 overall while the Rockets move to 5-23.

In the nightcap, the Penguins hammered out 14 hits, led by three apiece from Klonowski and freshman Haley Thomas. Thomas went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run - her first career blast - and four runs scored. Klonowski singled, doubled and belted a two-run home run to enforce the eight-run mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sophomore Ashley Conger, senior Allyse Ledford and freshman Kristen Philen each tallied two hits and Philen also drove in two runs with a single in YSU's four-run second inning.

The Penguins opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first, four in the second and two more in the third to jump out to an 8-0 lead after three innings.

Already with a 6-0 lead in the third, Ledford singled through the left side with one out and scored on Thomas' opposite-field home run to left field.

Toledo mounted a surge in the top of the fourth with two runs but Cale squashed the threat.

The Penguins added one more in the bottom of the fourth on Ledford's run scoring single to right-field.

Klonowski, who drilled an RBI-double in the bottom of the first, belted her fifth home run of the season to right-center field to end the game, 11-2.

In the opener, Klonowski led the Penguins with a 2-for-3 performance with three runs batted in, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the four inning.

Thomas also went 2-for-3 and two runs scored.

The Penguins host Horizon League foe Valparaiso in a single-game, Friday, April 10, at 5 p.m. The Guins and Crusaders also square off in a doubleheader, Saturday, April 11, at 11 a.m.
