Softball to Split Against Toledo
Canfield, Ohio -- Sophomore
Kim Kllonowski went 5-for-7 on the
day with two home runs, a double and
seven runs batted in, and junior
Cheryl Cale tossed a complete-game
four hitter in an 11-2 win in the
nightcap of a doubleheader split
against Toledo on Wednesday
afternoon at McCune Park. The
Penguins dropped the opener, 12-4.
Youngstown State
improves to 6-24 overall while the
Rockets move to 5-23.
In the nightcap,
the Penguins hammered out 14 hits,
led by three apiece from Klonowski
and freshman Haley Thomas. Thomas
went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run
- her first career blast - and four
runs scored. Klonowski singled,
doubled and belted a two-run home
run to enforce the eight-run mercy
rule in the bottom of the fifth
inning.
Sophomore Ashley
Conger, senior Allyse Ledford and
freshman Kristen Philen each tallied
two hits and Philen also drove in
two runs with a single in YSU's
four-run second inning.
The Penguins
opened the game with two runs in the
bottom of the first, four in the
second and two more in the third to
jump out to an 8-0 lead after three
innings.
Already with a
6-0 lead in the third, Ledford
singled through the left side with
one out and scored on Thomas'
opposite-field home run to left
field.
Toledo mounted a
surge in the top of the fourth with
two runs but Cale squashed the
threat.
The Penguins
added one more in the bottom of the
fourth on Ledford's run scoring
single to right-field.
Klonowski, who
drilled an RBI-double in the bottom
of the first, belted her fifth home
run of the season to right-center
field to end the game, 11-2.
In the opener,
Klonowski led the Penguins with a
2-for-3 performance with three runs
batted in, including a three-run
home run in the bottom of the four
inning.
Thomas also went
2-for-3 and two runs scored.
The Penguins host
Horizon League foe Valparaiso in a
single-game, Friday, April 10, at 5
p.m. The Guins and Crusaders also
square off in a doubleheader,
Saturday, April 11, at 11 a.m. |
