The Penguins lost
the season series to Wright State

contests in Dayton, Ohio. The

Penguins Chasing
500
The Youngstown
State softball team is on the verge
of picking up the program’s 500th
victory since the school instituted
fast-pitch softball in 1980. The
Penguins, who have 496 all-time
victories, need just four more
victories to accomplish that feat.
Cale Cruising
Junior pitcher
Cheryl Cale has been quite effective
in the circle for the Penguins,
especially against Horizon League
opponents. Cale, who has three of
the Guins’ four victories, owns a
2-2 record against Horizon League
foes and posts an earned-run average
of 1.69.
Cale Streak
Snapped
For 26
consecutive innings pitched, junior
Cheryl Cale did not allow her
opponents an earned run. Her streak
lasted from March 21 until March 29.
During that span she allowed just
four unearned runs and fired a
nine-inning shutout in a 1-0 win
over Loyola on March 22.
Klonowski
Clicking
Over the last 12
games, sophomore Kim Klonowski has
been tough to get out. Klonowski is
batting .415 during that span, going
17-for-41 with three doubles, three
home runs and nine runs batted in.
Klonowski tied a pair of single-game
records with four hits and two home
runs in a 6-5 loss to Loyola on
March 21. Klonowski also leads the
Penguins with a .478 batting average
against Horizon League opponents.
Scouting Detroit
Detroit enters
the week with an overall mark of
4-21 and a 0-6 record in the Horizon
League. Ellen Sinclair leads the
Titans with a .423 batting average
while Kristin Sclater leads the team
with four home runs and 20 runs
batted in. Pitchers Jill Perry and
Kara Spinelli each have two wins for
the Titans.
Up Next... UIC

series against UIC, April 4-5. The
Flames are currently 9-19 overall
and 3-0 in the Horizon League.

with a .338 batting average while
Ashley Hewett and Stephanie Chavez
rank second and third on the team
with .323 and .322 batting averages,
respectively.
Haley’s Comet
Freshman
outfielder Haley Thomas’ batting
average continues its meteoric
ascent. Over the last 12 games,
Thomas is batting .351 (13-for-37)
with three doubles, five runs scored
and a run batted in. Thomas is also
faring well against Horizon League
opponents, batting .400 (8-for-20)
with three doubles.
Campbell Notches
First Division I Victory
Head Coach Brian
Campbell picked up his first
Division I win with a 7-3 victory
over Saint Francis (Pa.) on March 7.
Campbell earned his second win with
a 5-4 win over LaSalle on March 13.
Overall, Campbell has 289 career
victories and needs just 11 more to
reach 300.
Ingalls Picks Up
Win
Freshman Jordan
Ingalls earned her first career
victory in a 5-4 come-from-behind
victory over LaSalle on March 13 at
the Rebel Spring Games. Against the
Explorers, Ingalls tossed seven
innings, scattered 12 hits and
struck out three.
Conger Belts
First Career Homer
Sophomore
newcomer Ashley Conger, who joined
the Penguins in January, hit her
first career home run against Wright
State on Sunday. With the game tied,
3-3, Conger’s blast gave the
Penguins a short-lived 4-3 lead. YSU
lost the game, 11-4. She also turned
in a career day at the plate in
YSU’s 5-4 win over LaSalle on March
13. Conger went 3-for-4 with three
runs batted in and tallied the
game-tying hit - a two-run single to
center field - in top of the
seventh. The Guins went on to score
the game-winner in the top of the
eighth inning. |
