The 2009 Youngstown State
University “Marching Pride” is gearing up for another exciting season supporting
Penguin Football. The 2008 Marching Pride was comprised of two Drum Majors, 22
Auxiliary including color guard, and penguinettes, 15 percussionists and 75 wind
players. The 2008 Pride consisted of undergraduate and graduate students who
represented over 30 academic majors at YSU.
The Marching Pride is directed by Mr. Don Linn,
dplinn@ysu.edu, and assisted by
Holly Ceci, Color Guard instructor, Jason Detec, percussion instructor; and
Stacey Walters-Emch, Penguinette advisor. The director of bands at YSU is Dr.
Stephen L. Gage.
This year the band
has three exciting halftime shows planned. The first show will feature
arrangements from the music of the rock band Queen. Some of the songs featured
in the show will be Bohemian Rhapsody, Bicycle, and We are the
Champions. The second show will be an upbeat and thrilling Jazz Show
featuring arrangements of Channel One Suite, In the Mood, and Birdland.
The band also presents a traditional pre-game show featuring a fanfare, the
Fight Song, the Alma Mater, a Patriotic Medley, and the National Anthem.
Occasionally the band will perform a special post-game show that includes fan
favorites like Shake a Tail Feather and Rock Youngstown.
Before many home games, the band performs a pre-game
“Icebreaker” concert in Beeghly gymnasium. In addition to the music of the
“Marching Pride,” the guest band of the day will perform school spirit songs and
highlights from upcoming shows.
Each year, the Marching Pride performs at home games to help
cheer on the Penguins football team. In addition, the band has hosted and
performed for the Bands of America Regional events held at Stambaugh Stadium
(2002-07), as well as recent away games at the University of Pittsburgh (2005),
Penn State University (2006) and The Ohio State University (2007 and 2008). The
marching band is schedule to join the Penguins at Heinz Field on Sept. 5 when
the they take on the Panthers of Pittsburgh.
The band has performed on broadcasts of ESPN and CBS as it
traveled to football championships with the 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1997 NCAA FCS
National Championship Penguin football teams; and, in 1999, when the Penguins
were the FCS National Runner-up team. The band has also performed for the
Cleveland Browns (2006), and Buffalo Bills of the National Football League.
