Penguins Fall to Marshall in Home Opener, 157-135
Youngstown -- The
Youngstown State women's swimming
and diving squad was defeated by
Marshall 157-135 in their season
home opener on Saturday afternoon in
Beeghly Natatorium.
The Thundering Herd, who were competing in their first
swimming competition since 1974, won
12 of the 16 events en route to
their victory.
Freshman Milla Kuurto anchored Marshall throughout the event,
placing first in the 200-yard
freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle,
and the 100-yard butterfly.
Erika Nillson, Liisa Raty, and Emily
Moe each won two events for the
Thundering Herd.
Senior co-captain Katie Kohut started her final year for the
Penguins off with a victory in the
500-yard freestyle while sophomore
co-captain Erin Carter won the
200-yard individual medley by edging
out Raty in the last length.
In diving, the Penguins dominated in both the one and
three-meter events. Sophomore
Kalyn Leveto won the one-meter
competition with a score of 252.90
and senior co-captain Mandie Smail
came in second with a score of
234.69. Smail earned the
victory in the three-meter with a
score of 235.43 and Leveto came in a
close second with 234.08.
Danielle Blagg earned two second place finishes for the
Penguins in the 100-yard and
200-yard breastroke. Also
finishing second for YSU were
Michelle Von Duhn in the 1000-yard
freestyle, Jordan Dunn in the
100-yard backstroke, Carter in the
200-yard butterfly, Lena Arens in
the 50-yard freestyle, Katy Malys in
the 100-yard freestyle, April
Gellatly in the 200-yard backstroke,
and Lauren Connolly in the 500-yard
freestyle.
The diving team competes tomorrow at the Clarion Invitational
and the full squad continues its
season next Friday at home against
Ohio Univeristy. |
