Red Wins Annual Red-Black Showdown, Arens Named Captain

Junior Erin Carter won two individual events and two relay events as the Youngstown State swimming and diving team competed in their annual intra-squad Red-Black Meet on Friday afternoon.
    Carter won the 200-yard individual medley and the 200 fly to lead the red team to a 125-88 victory.  The meet also marked head coach Matt Anderson's coaching debut and the announcement of lone-senior Lena Arens as team captain for the 2003-04 season.
    Also for the red team, junior Kalyn Leveto, who was named Horizon League Diver of the Year as a sophomore, won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.  Arens finished first in the 50 freestyle while Lauren Connolly led the way in the 500 free and Danielle Blagg won the 200 breast.  The red team also won the 200 medley relay and the 400 yard free relay.
    Junior Erika Gregos and freshman Becky Bertuzzi paced the black squad by picking up a win and a second-place finish apiece.  Gregos won the 1,000 free and finished second in the 200 fly while Bertuzzi won the 200 free and finished second in the 100 free.  Also for the black, Jordan Dunn won the 200 backstroke while Missy Weise was victorious in the 100 free.
    The Penguins will open their 2003-04 season on Oct. 18 when they play host to Marshall University at 4 p.m.
