Penguins Hold Red & Black Meet,
Carter and Leveto Named Captains
Youngstown -- Senior Erin Carter won three individual
events while Kalyn Leveto, Jordan
Dunn and Brittany Senn won two
events apiece as the Youngstown
State swimming and diving team
kicked off its season with the
annual Red & Black Intrasquad
Scrimmage at the Beeghly Natatorium.
Leveto and Dunn paced the black team that was coached by
diving coach Nick Gavolas to a
115-112 victory as the squad picked
up wins in seven events including
both relays. Carter and Leveto were
also announced as team captains for
the 2004-05 season at the meet.
Leveto, fresh off being named the 2004 Horizon League Diver
of the Year, won the 1-meter board
with a tally of 192.23 and the
3-meter with a 238.05. Dunn earned
victories in the 500 free in 5:33.06
and the 1,000 free in 11:18.46 while
Becky Bertuzzi won the 200 free with
a time of 2:05.66 to round out the
individual winners for the black
squad.
Carter won the 200-yard IM (2:17.86), the 200 butterfly
(2:16.13) and the 200 backstroke
(2:15.84) for the red time while
Senn, a freshman from Hinckley,
Ohio, won the 50 free in 25.93 and
the 100 free in 56.85.
Freshman Julia Darling was the only
other winner for the red team as she
won the 200 breast in 2:38.14.
Other members of the black team were Katy Malys, Danielle
Blagg, Missy Wiese, Michelle Von
Duhn, Sarah Porchak and Kristen
Moffatt. Amanda Howard, Amanda Ladd,
Megan Blazek, Kim Hanley, Erika
Gregos and Erin Mazzant were members
of the team.
The Penguins will kick off their season on Oct. 17 when they
travel to Huntington, W. Va., to
take on Marshall and Radford at 1
p.m.
