Women's Tennis: Penguins Sweep Valparaiso and EIU in Singles

   Toledo, Ohio. -- The Youngstown State women's tennis team wrapped up the regular fall season at the Toledo Invitational. Other teams competing included Akron, Eastern Illinois and league opponent Valparaiso. No team scores were kept in the two day event.

    On Saturday, Anna Volkova picked up a win at singles by defeating Akron's Amy Sherlock, 6-1, 6-0. Emily Thayer, Volkova and Tanisha Welch then defeated Valparaiso in three rounds of singles in the last match-up of the day.

    On Sunday, Thayer and Volkova teamed up to beat Valparaiso's Molly Keifer and Jenny Schwartz 8-0. Irena Lanc and Hannah Patten also defeated Valparaiso's Lauren Kloofstra and Jackie O'Reilly at doubles by a score of 8-2.

    Lanc, Kelly Culbertson and Patten concluded the weekend defeating Eastern Illinois in each of their singles matches.

    Emily Thayer and Anna Volvoka will prepare to head for the ITA Midwest Regional Tennis Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Oct. 17-19.
